Begonias

Begonia has some sort of scale like substance on stem

Hey! We have been scouring the internet and asking around if anyone could help identify if this is a type of disease or pest. It seems to grow along the stems. Recently the leaves started turning brown and dying. Any guidance would be appreciated, thanks!

Stem is totally normal. Cane begonias may get areas of what almost looks like bark as they mature (obviously not bark though). I notice it especially at the bases and areas of old growth. Not sure what the physiology behind it is though, lol.
