We’ve had a couple of rough winters here in north Texas but my shantung maple has struggled every Summer since planted in 2020. The leaves start scorching at the edges in July and typically it loses all if its leaves by September after turning brown and crispy. I’ve also had to cut some girdling roots 2 years ago. Note this pic was taken in June.

Hard to say but I suspect that drip line killed it or is killing it.
