Please, DO NOT Plant Asparagus This Way!

On today’s 2 minute garden tip, I share a critical mistake I made when planting asparagus crowns in my garden almost 4 years ago. I’ve been growing asparagus in a raised bed since 2021, and at first, the results were incredible, but now I’m having some problems. Heed my warning: please, do not plant asparagus this way!

  1. Ok so I think I made a mistake!
Now what? I planted only 8 root clusters in March but I don’t expect mine to look like yours 😮 Should I attempt to move them??

  2. I didn’t know this. I thought asparagus spreads because of the thousands of berries that contain the seeds that drop on the ground.

  3. Ok, hear me out, the covered garden bed can have things that are sensitive to sun and in the deep south hell; grow like spinach, lettuce and things.

  4. Sooooo what you’re saying is plant asparagus at a sibling’s house and watch it take control of their entire life! 😂

  5. Tried asparagus this year too. Though I put them in very large grow bags instead of in the ground. I’m sure it will limit the growth but hoping it’ll be easier to maintain

  6. Thank you for this!
I have 2 pots of asparagus that i planted from seeds 2 springs ago. I have been trying to decide where to move them.

So this video is just what I needed to see! 😊

  7. Phew. I planted mine on the far side of my yard in the shade where other stuff won't grow. They have lots of room to themselves.

  8. Thank you!!! I have the same problem being new to growing asparagus. I'll be making it's own plot. Now to figure out where 🙂

  9. I have raised aspirations for years. In 3 different homes in different states and growing zones. I hav3 never had an issue with invasive plants. Yes your asparagus greens grow tall and will block the sun if you put them in the wrong place. 👍

  10. I ended up making a "cage" for my asparagus. My bed is planted with Mary Washingtons, planted over 10 years ago. Basically I pound in a t-post in the corners, and one 1/2 way between them. Then I string wire, (not twine) between them. This helps dramatically with asparagus flop, and I can access the paths and nearby beds.

When you get your killing freeze, just take down the wire, and clean out the bed. Leave the wire off until you've done your last picking in spring.

  11. The foliage is fabulous for florists as filler. (How many 'f's did I manage to use in that one phrase? I am effing chuffed).

  12. Ugh! I just planted 2 beds of asparagus this past spring. They are in 2 raised beds in the middle of my raised bed garden. In the fall when the foliage has died back, can I move them without killing them? We are expanding the garden so I’ll have plenty of space to move them into.
