It makes me wonder if cockscomb celosia originated as a faciated celosia.

This particular species is introduced in the US. It’s native to Eurasia and was brought to North America by early settlers for medicinal use. It’s mainly just naturalized in the eastern US, but it can be invasive in more arid or dry areas, especially in the western states.
