  1. Maple trees sold by nurseries are normally sold as grafted plants because it’s the only way to ensure you are getting the exact cultivar you want, and the number one method by which to propagate a cultivar is to graft it into compatible rootstock.

    The green is the rootstock, the bottom part that has sprouted branches that you were and are supposed to prune off for the duration of the life of the tree. If you don’t, it can overtake the cultivar and it’s taking energy away from the optimum growth of the cultivar.

    Prune off the side shoots coming from the rootstock beneath the graft union—immediately.
