How Bernie Mases landscaped his back yard’s 45-degree upward slope is brilliant. The area is 160 feet long, and ranges from 38 feet wide on the south end to 80 feet on the north. “I didn’t want an ordinary bank,” he says.
For more on what Bernie did to make the back-yard slope low-maintenance and lovely, including irrigation and erosion-control info, see the CORRESPONDING ARTICLE ON MY SITE. There you’ll also find a gallery of the garden’s main plants, all labeled:

Thanks for sharing this beautiful garden!
What did you like and/or learn about Bernie's garden? The erosion control blew me away. And those views! Get detailed info and plant IDs on my site: https://debraleebaldwin.com/succulent-landscape/steep-succulent-slope/
I hope the new home owners, whoever they are, keep up this magnificent garden. It is truly amazing! The mature specimens of Podocarpus and Aloe ‘Hercules’ are stunning !
What an absolutely beautiful and tranquil home.
I laughed so hard at 7:45 when he said, "You're good girl. I've never had someone come in my yard that could identify plants." What? Excuse me, she is Debra Lee Baldwin, Sir!! LOL!!
Excellent garden review!
That was an irresistible subject line and you totally delivered, Debra! Gorgeous and ingenious, as promised 🥰
Beautiful property, incredible views and simply gorgeous gardens…still drooling from Ontario Canada 😁. Thanks
Excellent!
Absolutely beautiful and inspiring. Thank you for sharing this lovely garden with us!
Beautiful landscape. Thank you for the video.
Absolutely fabulous. I have about an acre of succulents, nowhere near as beautiful, but almost all of them came from my affiliation with the Palomar Catus and Succulent Society. Great shout out. Thanks for sharing.
That house and landscape is so pretty, but why are they moving?
Thank you for sharing. Bernie thoughtfully planned for his 45 degree slope and it proved to work successfully as well as being beautiful!
What a massive effort for them to make it all work! Very well done, thanks for sharing Debra 😁
Wow!😮 What a beautiful garden!😍They are very brave to sell such a beautiful property🤭Good luck!💚💚💚💚🌵🪴
I remember when there wasn’t a single plant on the property when they first bought it.
Bernie had a vision and gradually transformed everything over the years, working on it nearly every day after he came home from his regular work.
The back at one time was almost straight up just feet from the back door. Look at it now!
Carefully planned and beautifully maintained. Bernie is and should be very proud of what he’s done there.
This is a lovely garden. He really did create a flow through the slope, which is an incredible achievement!
Beautiful landscape. That Aloe tree!!!
