Hardscaper with a walkway question

First off I want to say a big THANK YOU to this community for all of your knowledge. It’s safe to say that I have learned 1000x more than i knew about trees before I joined this sub.

With that said, I am a hardscaper. I stick to pavers, concrete, bricks and wall block. BUT I get these calls all the time. “I have a tree that’s pushing up my sidewalk/pavers/bricks. Can you make me a new one? But please don’t hurt my tree!”

I often tell them the cold hard truth that there’s nothing I or anyone else can do to accomplish both besides putting above ground planking over the top like a deck or a dock.

I’ve heard of the playground rubber stuff used as well. But have read some stuff about toxic chemicals in those being bad for tree roots too. Which brings me to my question.

Has anyone seen any attractive, safe and cost effective ways to build walking pathways around tree roots?

Thank you all again for sharing your knowledge!
