Tree was planted in 2018 and has been doing really well. Huge windstorm last night ripped a significant branch down. It looks like a lot of damage on the trunk. Is this tree finished? What can we do?
Just saw the branch that broke off cleanly. It will be fine.

That’s a very significant tear that will not encapsulate and is a big opportunity for decay to begin. The tear being on the central leader really compounds the challenge. Decay at what was the branch union is visible. It’s hard to tell from the photos, but perhaps if there is another candidate to establish as a leader the damaged stem could be pruned in a way that encourages encapsulation (this would require removing the current leader).
