Are these dead? From what I can tell they are American elm who suffered dutch elm disease. Could I use the wood for anything if so?

They look more like ash than elm. I have many ash and elms. The mature ash are all dead, with lots of younger saplings and small trees. Regardless, the emerald ash borer will get them all, eventually. Most of the elms are suffering from DED and are similarly doomed to an early demise.

If the wood is cut, dried, milled, etc. (onsite) no problems. If you want to transport the wood, even to burn it, problems.

You don’t want to log a tree with dutch elm and then move it 20 miles and have it sit with its bark on for years. Processing and burning onsite is totally ok. Ain’t no bark beetles living on your dining room chair.
