The holes came with the place. A few other trees were near to lawn level so I removed the boxes. These two boxes are really deep, though, and if it’s one thing I’ve learned from This Old House – treecanoes of dirt are bad!

if you cover the roots then you kill the tree slowly… have some faith in the old ways

Something is going on in the second picture with the tree in the background. It looks like there is a large portion of the tree missing. I would have someone look at that tree.
