Homesteading

My cross-beaked baby, Crooked, passed away in her sleep last night. I wanted to share some photos of her living her best life on our homestead.

We hatched her and her siblings in May for a friend, but we ended up keeping her because she needed a little extra help and I was worried about her. She ate most of her meals sitting in my palm, and she always came running up the porch stairs when I hollered her name. She grew, but not as much as the others. She was my tiny girl, and I won't ever forget her.

It sure looks like the time you did get together was filled w joy. That’s saying something!

That’s because she was starving to death.

I understand you think you were helping this poor bird, but all you did was prolong her tortured life. Animals that can’t eat and drink on their own should be euthanized. It’s the humane thing to do. Keeping them alive for your own amusement is torture.

I spent a lot of time volunteering for wildlife rehab and other animal welfare orgs. I love animals. And it hurts me to see that you kept this thing alive longer than it should have naturally lived with a congenital deformity.

Some chickens are surprisingly loveable. Sorry you lost her.

I also have a cross beak chicken, although hers is pretty mild. She’s almost 11 years old and still lays some.

Awe, I lost my cross-beaked baby today, too. I’m glad you got such good pictures with Crooked, and glad she lived her best life 🩵
