Is there any hope for this cutting?

A piece of my zz plant broke off, so I figured, why not stick it in some water and see what happens! It ended up developing these two adorable (albeit suggestive) rhizomes before the leaves ultimately reached the end of their life cycle—at least that’s what I assume.

Are the rhizomes also doomed? Should I keep it in water if there is a possibility they will develop a stalk? Or am I a dreamer because that’s just not how it works? Lol.

I’m also aware of the algae growth… I did change the water weekly, though it was in a clear vessel somewhat by a north facing window so that’s on me!
