Cactus

My 25 year old pal.

This neglected pal had babies. Do the babies need to be removed? What happens if they are all kept together? I can’t believe how long I’ve had this cactus. I don’t know what it’s called either. I have some good cactus growing mix. I want to put it in this terra cotta pot.

Any advice? Thank you! ☺️

  1. I suggest carefully removing the soil from around the roots then potting it up to the larger one with a fresh mix of cactus soil. You may as well buy premade in as you only need enough to fill that and you clearly don’t water it all that often so water retention isn’t a big risk. The suckers (the babies) do not need removing although you can if you like. If you do, let the separation wounds dry out for a week or so before putting them back into soil.

OMG! My first r/cactus reply! Thank you! I should have asked for help years ago!

This dear friend has the yellow/brown wrinkled areas that I’m worried about. These areas are not mushy. Just did a quick read of info online and I hope it doesn’t have root rot. I really want to help it have a good life again. My life got crazy and this happened.

That’s so interesting the suckers need to dry out before giving them their own pot.

I have a bag of mix from a succulent grower in Half Moon Bay, CA. The entire nursery is just succulents and cacti. Amazing place.

I’m going to re-pot this one and another one I posted about. I’m so excited!

hi, i came here from the comment you left on one of my posts. remove the soil from the roots, the best way to do this (in my experience) is to spray it with a water hose, it will get way more soil off than your hands will be able to, and it usually breaks less roots than your hands. once you get the dirt off of the roots, replant it in a 50/50 mix of your cactus soil and some expanded shale (available for pretty cheap at most plant stores, and also makes a pretty good top soil, its what i use on all the plants in my profile if you want to see what it looks like). this cactus is gymnocalycium horstii. heres some pictures so you can see others like it.
