The guy that owner my house before me was a master gardener, and did something that I’ve never seen before. He actually used carpet under the rock. It has lasted much longer than any landscape fabric I’ve ever used, and is thick enough to block most weeds (even 10+ years later).

Its a disaster to NOT use it. Not only prevents many weeds the real value is prevents the rock from sinking into the dirt over time creating ‘dirt with rocks in it’ which is terrible and full of weeds. Get water permeable fabric.

Yes need to use fabric or poly. Double/triple layer it if you feel like it’s a cheap material that won’t hold up well.

Regardless of what you do, you need to remove 3inches of dirt or it will just be gravel smooshed into dirt

I’ve had good results with 5.8oz woven. It’s hard for weeds to penetrate, but a few will. Most (not many) will germinate on top, but they’re easy to pull. I’d spray first.
