Fiddle Leaf Fig

Fiddle leaf fig tree trunk slowly dying from to down

This tree has been resurrected several times but Im worried this time there’s no coming back. It used to be 7 feet tall when I first got it. Then the leaves all fell off and I put it outside thinking it died. Miraculously, it came back alive so I brought it inside, but then all the new leaves had huge black dirt looking things and the diagnosis from this group was that it was the worst thrips infestation they’d seen and I need to kill it before it infects my other plants. So outside it goes again except my husband douses it with vinegar. Thinking it was dead for sure, I was waiting for it to dry out so I could cut it for firewood. But, miraculously AGAIN, it comes back to life! Lots of new leaves coming out from the bottom of the tree near the trunk as well as new leaves from the top. However, after a couple months, I noticed the top branches were getting soft and the young leaves started falling off. I’ve been cutting off the branches a little by little but it seems to keep coming farther down the trunk. I don’t know what to do at this point. Any advice or thoughts on what could be causing this?

Additional info: I bottom water every other week. Plant is next to window and gets plenty of light.
