I apologize for the unsolicited advice, but putting sand on top of the substrate slows the wet-dry process of the potting mix, which is imperative for the health of these plants. This compromises root health and ruins any aroid mix underneath it. I assume that you were doing this to deal with fungus gnats. There are much more effective measures to deal with the larvae and deter the adults.
