Questions first time grafting San Pedros to pereskiopsis


I'm hoping to get a little guidance. I received some pereskiopsis recently and they pretty quickly seemed pretty happy in their new home with lots of nice green growth. So I'm going to attempt my first grafts. I've got several San Pedro seedlings close to the same size as these peres. Some are terschekii, about 7 months old, also pictured.

My main questions are: where is the best place to make the cuts for the grafts on the rootstock? Do I need to cut at the new growth offshoots or can I cut the tops of the callused ends where they were already cut? Any other tips welcomed! I also want to continue to be able to propagate these peres for future grafting.

    I usually cut the callous a day or two before and get the off shot rooting. And then wait for the little red of pups in the side before I graft so it’s actively pumping. I also use rooted as they tend not to be floppy.

    I use hair clips to hold on newer pere

    Also if it’s small enough you have two grafts a tip and a butt (I generally don’t save the rot on impales)

    The newer pere shoots work best for grafting. You should cut the new shoots off the older stems, callus and root them, grow out until they are 5 or 6 inches tall. Then graft onto them. I use plastic wrap and clothes pins, almost never have a failure. Replant the tip you cut off and continue to cut new shoots off the original pere stalk. Rinse and repeat.

    I’ve grafted to a few pere now and the only things that seems to be constant with failure is grafting too soon after watering, grafting too big a seedling, grafting too little a seeding and grafting to stock that is starting to get woody. I tried using the clip and plastic film method and the issue is the spines on the scions. So I went to the little baggie method and I’ve had a few failures but few. I also wasn’t prepared for the scion to turn red before the growth started. As far as drafting on off shoots my fastest growth has come on an offshoot graft. In my limited experience the pere is going to pup irregardless of where I cut it.
