As food prices soar the need to be able to grow your own food increases. However, many people don’t know where to start when it comes to creating your own vegetable garden at home. Before you start creating a vegetable garden there are a few things you need to learn and understand. In part 2 of this ten part series in creating a vegetable garden I cover location. More specifically, the seasonal sun movements and the changes in the sun’s arc which can create shade where there was sun and sun where there was shade.

Then I discuss the incredibly important, and highly overlooked point, point of trees. When starting your first vegetable garden it is crucial to understand what the final tree sizes will be when they are mature for any trees that border your property. The reason for this is that a tree that has no impact on your home vegetable garden now could cast full shade the whole day in 5 years time.

I also discuss the importance of taking your building and outhouses into account when choosing the location for your new vegetable garden.

  1. An additional thought on the position of the sun. My land slopes gently to the NNW which wouldnโ€™t seem to make an enormous difference in the sunโ€™s position relative to the garden but my neighborโ€™s land slopes gently to the SW and this seems to make a slight difference in the vigor of his veggies over mine. โ€” something to think about in buying land or placing a garden.
