Plants

How to keep this plant in optimal condition?

First of all, what is the name of this plant? Is it an indoors or outdoors type? I only keep it indoors but over time the twigs are starting to hang down more and more, is this a problem or should I bind them together to help them stay upright? Does it only need water or some type of plant food? Should I keep it close to a window?

Additional advice is also welcome.

Bird of Paradise. 160 PPFD for good growth, Grown in greenhouses at 400-1000 PPFD, and can tolerate up to 4 hours of full outdoor sun a day. (2000 PPFD)

Indoors they need large windows facing the sun, or lots of good grow lights that cover all their leaves. Leaves that dont get light will be sacrificed by the plant.

I have 5 that have to be brought in for the winter, one will either come home with me and live under spot lights, or go in the event room at work by the 12ft x 16ft south facing window, the other 4 will go in the 4ft x 4ft grow tent in the basement that has a 420w LED grow light

Looks like a bird of paradise to me (I have one) and I live in Oregon.

Yes it will need food just like humans and animals need more than just water. We need food too.

I got mine for Mother’s Day in 2023 and it was less than 2 feet tall. It was outside till it got cold and then I kept it inside. Continued growing just not as fast. I don’t have great light. Then as the weather got warm again I went to put it back outside and it nearly died. Absolutely didn’t want to be back outside. But it continues to grow and is getting a new leaf even right now.

When I worked at Home Depot we would get them in and they would say full sun and other times we’d get them in and they would say low light. So I looked them up. Apparently they grow either way. Full sun they will grow faster and eventually bloom. Less light slower and may or may not bloom or maybe just take much longer.

I’m sure you can look up more specific care but I hope my experiences have helped some.

My plant in a 12” ish inch pot on the floor is about 4’ tall now?.. maybe? His name is Gilderoy but we call him Gil.

Edit to add… it also looks like you have two plants in one pot. You’ll prob want to separate them.
