What’s going on with this tree?

Hi Knowledgable Tree Folk,

I don’t know anything about trees. I don’t even know what kind of tree this is. It was just here when we moved it. We’ve enjoyed its presence, it’s shade, it’s ambiance — but now, it’s had fallen branches and I’ve noticed this growth. What is it? Is the tree sick? Is the tree dead? Can we help the tree? Can it be saved? Any information or guidance is appreciated.

Looks like those larger branches died a while ago to have that much decay. Outer canopy looks to be declining too.

Some sort of maple that I’m not familiar with. Sometimes maples in my area die in the center but survive and are structurally sound for years. Sometimes they’re too dangerous. Hard to say anything too concrete.

It’s close to a house, I’d have an arborist come look at it in person to make sure it’s safe
