#Crested Gecko Fact Profile
Scientific Name: Correlophus ciliatus
Common Names: Crested gecko, eyelash gecko Family: Diplodactylidae
Conservation Status: Vulnerable (IUCN Red List)
#Physical Characteristics:
Size: Adult crested geckos typically range from 6″-10″ (15-25cm) in length, including their tails.
Weight: They usually weigh between 25 to 55 grams.
Color: They come in various colors and patterns, including shades of brown, red, orange, yellow, and cream. Morphs like “flame,” “harlequin,” and “dalmatian” describe the specific patterns and color combinations.
#Distinctive Features
Crested geckos have fringed crests that run from the sides of their eyes down to the base of their tails, giving them their name.
They have a unique set of lamellae (tiny scales) on their toes, which allows them to climb smooth surfaces like glass.
Crested geckos lack eyelids and clean their eyes with their tongues.
#Habitat and Distribution
Natural Habitat: They are native to the rainforests of New Caledonia, an island country in the southwest Pacific.
Environment: Crested geckos prefer humid, tropical environments with plenty of trees and plants for climbing and hiding.
#Behavior and Diet
Activity: They are nocturnal, being most active at night and spending the day hiding in foliage or under bark.
Diet: In the wild, they primarily eat insects, fruit, and nectar. In captivity, they are typically fed a diet of commercial gecko food mixes supplemented with fruit and insects like crickets and mealworms.
Behavior: Crested geckos are generally gentle and can be handled easily, making them popular pets. They are also known for their ability to “drop” their tails when threatened; however, unlike some other geckos, their tails do not regenerate.
#Reproduction
Breeding: Females can lay eggs as early as 8-12 months old, though it’s better to wait until they are at least 18 months and weigh over 35 grams.
Eggs: Females lay clutches of two eggs every 30-45 days during the breeding season, typically from spring to early fall.
Incubation: Eggs usually take about 60-120 days to hatch, depending on temperature and humidity.
#Lifespan
Wild: Unknown, but likely shorter than in captivity due to predation and environmental factors.
Captivity: With proper care, crested geckos can live up to 15-20 years.
