Hey everyone! Welcome back to the homestead. Today is a super exciting day—we just harvested our very first watermelon at 7,600 feet! 🍉🎉 Growing watermelon in the Colorado mountains has always been a challenge for us, but thanks to our greenhouse, we’ve finally made it happen. This 4lb melon may be on the smaller side, and it’s a little underripe, but it’s still an incredible achievement for us. For years, we’ve struggled to grow melons in this climate, and to finally have one in our hands feels like a victory.
In this video, you’ll see us carefully harvesting the watermelon from the vine and cutting into it to check out how it turned out. Even though it’s not fully ripe, it’s still perfectly edible and delicious! We’re beyond grateful for the greenhouse, which has opened up new possibilities for what we can grow at this altitude. We’ve got more watermelons on the vine that we’ll leave to ripen a bit longer, and we’re looking forward to seeing how they turn out.
If you’re curious about high-altitude gardening, greenhouse growing, or if you’ve ever wondered if you can grow melons in the mountains, this video is for you! This small but sweet success is a testament to how much can be achieved with a little persistence, creativity, and the right growing environment. Be sure to check out more of our gardening victories and homestead adventures as we continue to explore new ways to grow sustainably here in the Colorado mountains.

So tiny and 🥰 cute
Just needed more time
Yea!😊
It needed more time to ripen….. 🫣 that’s how it looks to me. How was the taste of you don’t mind me asking
Should have left it another week
soo good 🔥🔥🔥
Leaving it until touching it makes it fall off the vine is what you’re looking for
🎉🎉🎉
I tried growing watermelon this year/ total disaster . I only got 2 and they were softball sized. Unedible. The other 10 were large sized marbles that were totally black. I thought it would be easy like , my tomatoes and cabbage and green onions. Nope/😢
Sour ass watermelon
It's not ripe enough. Wait till the vines die to harvest it
Think about the farmers
You need to learn some patience
Indeed the first one it's not ripe leave it for longer next time
Not ripe yet
There's no way that watermelon was not ripe.
