Alocasia

First time alocasia owner, any tips?

I decided to go for a challenge and get my first alocasia yesterday. I’m not sure what type it is as it wasn’t labelled.

Unfortunately I’ve found some type of pest (pic 2), I think it could be a mealybug? I’ve killed it and can’t see any more obvious ones, but I’ve put the plant in the only spot I can find without other plants for now until I can give it a wipe down with rubbing alcohol.

The soil is pretty dry (pic 3) but I plan to repot it asap so will water immediately after – I always repot my plants even if I don’t upsize them just so I know exactly what the soil is, if it contains nutrients etc. I’ve been going for a mix of 1:1:1 coco coir, perlite and orchid bark for most of my plants as the soil is really struggling to dry recently.

I’m unsure on placement currently, trying to find the most humid spot away from windows that I open – my house naturally has high humidity throughout but I run a dehumidifier in the bedroom and bathroom so will avoid these. Everywhere else remains over 60 percent, so this should in theory be ok without a humidifier?

I always struggle with terms like ‘medium to bright indirect light’ – does it want to be right in a window or is it ok further away in a well-lit room?

Any other tips greatly appreciated 🙂
