Rose of Sharon help

We have a big rose of Sharon in our landscape and it has developed a very large split in the trunk. Half of the “tree” has been thin the past couple of years and we’re concerned. Our arborist retired and his replacement doesn’t like following up after he says he’ll stop out to take a look. We went to our trusted local nursery for advice and they recommended cleaning out the crack, filling the void with foam, and sealing with prune sealer, so that’s what we did. Now we have fungus coming through. Did we royally mess up here? What should our next steps be? We really like this and don’t want to lose it. Any help would be appreciated.
