I can handle pumpkin, but butternut squash is awful. My reaction was getting worse each time until I figured it out and starting wearing gloves to peel and cut it.

No, no you’re not. It happens to me but worse because I do dozens of them at a time. Wear gloves next time.

Same thing happened to my brother. He used to carve pumpkins with me and my mom but one year his arms broke out in a rash. He also has some allergies with other raw vegetables and a few fruits.
This is just the starch from the squash on your hands. This is normal.

Pumpkin (and lots of other squashes) have enzymes that act as a natural exfoliate. This is probably in the realm of normal reactions to it and I second kitchen gloves!
