Root rot ? When stems started falling off, I thought I hadn’t watered it enough so I gave it more water, but not a lot. Now it’s turning black.

Also, I got it as one of my first plants and I actually don’t love how it’s growing sideways, reaching for the light. I see these plants hanging down like strings of hearts on internet photos, how come ?

Probably rot due to overwatering. You can let these plants dry out quite a bit. I usually test the (older) leaves to see if it needs water: if they are hard and stiff, they don’t need water. When they’re flexible and a little wrinkled, time to water! But once you have root rot that trick doesn’t work anymore. I would dig it up, remove all the root rot you see, clean with hydrogen peroxide if you have it and replace the soil. Then water it when it needs it. The large spaces between the leaves is likely due to a lack of light. The new leaves always tend to grow somehwat horizontally, but they’ll dip down when more leaves appear. It’s mostly the weight of the leaves that pulls them down. Hope this helps
