Do old oncidium bulbs dry out without rotting?

This is my Oncidium Gold Dust. It currently has three spikes. The newer growths all look good except for some fungal spotting. Earlier in the year one old bulb just shrunk down to a flat shape. It was never soggy and had no bad smell or anything. Now this is happening to the original bulb the plant came with that had two spikes coming out of. Again the bulb is shriveled and yellow but not squishy or wet at the base and there is no bad smell. The growths with the spikes and the ones that preceded those are fine.

Do bulbs just get old due to natural causes? The plant will be due for a repot when the next new growths start. Should this be treated as an emergency or should I just take care of it at the regular repot time?
