Orchids

I was given these as a house warming gift. How do I keep them alive?

I have never taken care of flowers before, and I would really love to keep these alive for as long as I can.

  • how often should I water them/how should they be watered?
  • should I re-pot it? If not now, then what signs should I look out for to know when?
  • how often should I feed it/what type of food should it be given?

It is currently sitting on my kitchen windowsill, which faces North. I am in the UK – is this enough sunlight?

Apologies for asking some rather obvious questions!

Since you’re new to orchids- I highly recommend watching Miss Orchid Girl on YouTube! She has great informative videos and a whole series dedicated to Orchid Care for Beginners. She’ll teach you almost everything you need to know🌱🌺
But to answer your questions quickly:
    1. Water when the roots are dry (they will be a silvery light green rather than bright green when dry)
    2. Repot once all the flowers fall. Don’t panic, it’s normal, they are seasonal bloomers. Check Miss Orchid Girl for how and what to repot in.
    3. Yes, fertilize, but start about a month or two after repotting and check her videos for which fertilizers to use.
    4. Phalaenopsis orchids like yours prefer bright shade (areas with plenty of light but no direct sunlight touching them as that could lead to sunburn)

Plenty of videos that can answer all your questions. Google miss orchid girl Phals

Don’t repot it. I soak mine about once every week or two. The flowers won’t last forever. That is normal. When they fall off, cut back the stem. It will flower again in about a year if conditions are right.
