I’ve had pagoda plants in every FL garden I’ve ever had. Just so you know, they become VERY invasive. I’ve decided to get rid of mine even though I love them. But I’m completely tired of trying to keep them contained.
I’ll probably try to keep one or two in large pots.
But I’ll think about that one I finally get on top of the getting rid of them. Which will be a long term project because they send runners up far, far, away from where you plant them.
Anyway, I’d suggest keeping it in a large pot.
Plus, I have no doubt they’re truly invasive. Generally speaking.
Anyway, funny you just got one because I spent all weekend digging them out of my garden. Me & a guy a hired to help me.
Don’t know if you’d be interested, but there’s a garden center in Orlando that’s starting to sell natives. They also need some Old Fashion Pentas – lol. They’re looking for growers. So, if you want to expand, they’d probably be very interested
Are you going to do the heirloom pink Pentas? I think the root easier than the red. Some of my pinks are almost to the top of my house, and reeeaaaally popular with butterflies right now
How do you start your pentas from cuttings? Water? Direct into soil? I have a beautiful plant I am trying to overwinter in my garage but would like more plants for next year. Zone 6B
Mystic Blue Spires – that was me 😊
Aren’t they beautiful????
You’ll want more. I actually plant a few every year.
Don’t get more than one pagoda plant !!!!! lol. Yes, they’re beautiful. And, yes, both large swallowtails and humming birds love them. But, truly, in about 3 years they become a pain in the ass.
They do well in pots – keep them in pots – lol.
The new plants are gorgeous! So excited to see them in the garden 💃🏻
I feel like I comment this every time, but keep an eye on your host trees, because I’m 100% positive that tiger swallowtail was a female. I also love the idea of your little garden and the tall wetland garden! My personal advice would be to just do what you’re thinking about doing and if you don’t like it, change it up until you like it! By the way, I don’t think I ever told you but remember when i commented about the caterpillars on the false nettle from Joyful Butterfly? They turned into STUNNING red admirals! It was awesome to watch them grow because they’re a little house maker like the spicebush swallowtail! Hopefully next season I get to raise more because they’re so cute! Also, how easy is it to propagate a penta? My red penta is growing like crazy and I would like to get a few more going indoors over the winter so I’m ready for the spring season. I already have an army of Tithonia seeds at the ready when I tell you that come January 1st I’m starting hundreds of Tithonia, I mean hundreds😂. I bought out a whole Walmart section of those little starter trays. So the Tithonia and pentas which were my biggest hits this year will be ready for any early ones that come back in March like last year!
I am doing the same with my joyful butterfly hall!🤩 such healthy plants. fYI… they have coontie plants on mail order natives. I think I remember them being $10 but not sure on the size container. Have a great week!🐛🦋
Last comment. Love the idea of a berry garden.
Oh my – do yourself a favor and plant that pagoda in a pot. Otherwise you will be fighting runners for the rest of your days! I have the red one you bought, white and purple. I bet I pull hundreds of volunteers every year. With hundreds to go. Worst plant I’ve ever added to the ground in regards to being invasive.
You may want to buy clear anti UV spray for your plastic totes so they dont degrade and become brittle from exposure to the weather and sunlight ☀️
I was lucky too! I had the thought to order more perennials from Joyful B before the end of the season to get them established and saw the 50% off deal!
I ordered Swamp Milkweeds, Purple Coneflowers, and some seeds for False Nettle. I read that false nettle grows slowly so im going to start them in January with the winter sowing method 🌱☀️❄️
❤❤❤❤❤
Your shopping spree was great, you picked up some real beautiful plants…what fun!!
I’m guessing I shouldn’t have left my phone number.
Anyway, the name of the garden center in Orlando is “Appenberry’s”. It’s a smaller garden center right in the middle of the College Park neighborhood of Orlando. So very close to downtown Orlando.
In my opinion, it’s a fantastic location for a native plant outlet. If I were younger, I’d open a native plant nursery around this location.
Appenberry’s is an older business & is always very busy. I live right down the road, so I see how busy they are.
When I say that it’s “smaller” – I mean smaller than large nurseries. But it’s probably about 3 to 6 times larger than The Nectary. (It’s hard to say because they have a lot of space they don’t even use).
Anyway, the owners are extremely nice. And at one time they sort of offered me some space if I wanted to run a small native nursery – we really didn’t get into the details because I don’t want to run a small nursery – lol.
But it indicates their potential willingness to work with someone.
Anyway, so they’ve been thinking about bringing native plants in for quite some time. Now they’re actually doing it. For instance, they just got a small order of a few native bushes.
Their plan is to have a small native section.
Personally, I think they should do a small native PLUS non-native section. A one stop nectar garden section with a heavy focus on the native butterfly host plants.
So, my recommendation would be host plants. Native salvia, rosin weed, tea bush, soft leaf coffee (the flowers of soft leaf is preferred by butterflies over the shiny leaf in my experience), fire bush, Simpson’s stopper, Walter’s viburnum, cassia, split leaf cone flower, pentas, mystic blue spires & African blue basil. And zinnias and orange Mexican sunflower when in season.
If you’d like to talk more about this – I think it’s a potentially really fantastic opportunity for someone – just let me know how we can get ahold of each other
Also – personally, I think it’s a good idea to provide at least 3 “starter plan” drawings for a small nectar garden. Because in my experience, a lot of people are interested in creating one, but don’t know where to start.
Secondly, it encourages more sales 😮
Plus, doing a few “plans” is pretty easy to do. I’m frankly surprised garden centers aren’t doing this.
