Those are a lot pumpkins! How did you get this photo?

To prepare for the shot, I first did quite a bit of research on the various types of pumpkins, squashes and gourds and worked with Thad, the editor, to refine the list of varieties we wanted to include. I then traveled to a farm about an hour north of me that specializes in heirloom pumpkins and worked with the owner and staff there to select the best specimens of each type. It was literally two wheelbarrows full!

I brought all the pumpkins back to my studio and set the shot up there. Some of them were very heavy so styling the shot was tricky. The pumpkins are balanced carefully to a) not tip over and b) show off their distinctive features. 🍃

We all love taking pictures of our gardens and plants (ok, food too!) any tips?

One tip with such a photograph is to really work with the light source so that your subject shows great dimension and texture. Play around with different effects. In this case, I used very strong side lighting to enhance the roundness and creases of each pumpkin and to bring interest to the shadows.
