  1. How many holes do you put in the container and how many sides? I've leaned a lot from your videos. I'm about to fill two totes now. Thank you.

  2. This is also an excellent method for renters and people who may have to move frequently. My husband is active duty Marine Corps, so we have to be ready to pick up and move pretty frequently. With this kind of container gardening we can take our garden with us and not have to lose out on the time and money we invested to grow our own food.

  3. I got my first tub for free a few days ago. I'm really looking forward to trying this method.
My brother who's Autistic favors Tomatoes instead of Candy and chips. Eats them like Candy. I'm excited about making him his own Tomatoes plant. Nothing like fresh Organic Tomatoes. Thank you so much for the wonderful idea! Much love from Corpus Christi Texas!

  4. Hi Robbie…… I know you posted this a couple years ago. I've been following you along with container gardening in totes and of course my most important hummingbirds. Here in Connecticut I only get a few maybe two three or four. But I cherish them. But thank you for motivating me to Garden. I just bought my tool and covered my beautiful tomatoes and peppers before the birds and critters get them

  5. Online Family, be sure to use an anonymous name on YouTube especially because we are talking about prepping and pantries.

  6. Dear lady, you are a national treasure. The 99% of us, who are poor, but still want our own gardens, can do this. You explained this so wonderfully and you speak to those of us, who must live frugally by absolute necessity. God bless you wonderful lady. You have changed lives by this video. Do you also have a video on how to winterize the totes. I live in the midwest and we got 10" of snow last year. I want to grow all year round and I'm wondering how to protect the plants from extreme cold and snow.

  7. Thanks! Just a question about the first, or bottom, layer. Can the very bottom layer be all rocks & stones, and then put some of my native soil (clay-like) on top of them?

  8. Hi, got one more question for ya'. You mentioned using shredded paper, and I was wondering, the papers I shred have ink on them. Is that something to be concerned about, or is it ok to bury the shredded papers with ink on them. And then there are the newspaper mailer ads that come once a week, the ink on them actually smells, so idk. Lemme know what you think, thanks so much for your videos. I'm enjoying them very much.

  9. I like this idea of portability. No single place in my yard gets 6-8 hours of sun a day, but using totes allows me to move them in order to follow the sun.

  10. Thank you for a video that has actual valuable information and not a bunch of fluff And filler. You have a new subscriber in me

  11. I live in Maryland and I tried growing my veggies in totes this year. It was hit or miss.
The herbs did well but the potatoes didn’t. The foliage looked amazing but there were very few potatoes. I suppose I learned from this experience but Im sincerely disappointed. I will be trying again next year. The totes did great- no break down or cracking.

  12. So my problem is my zucchini and yellow squash was doing well but they basically pulled their self out of their totes. Suggestions?

  13. Great post. Way better that planting in a 5 gallon pail and I suspect 3 times the space. Definate going to give this a try. My pot plants will love this. Opse my potted plants will love this.

  14. A tote and a chair with composter in place, wow! Your system is simple, cheap, effective and efficient! Thank you! Now I just found a simple solution to my needs…expanding my growing area onto part of my brick patio.

  15. Costco had some totes on sale a couple of months ago, packs of 3, with lids included, for pretty cheap. I snapped up a few sets, planning to do just this. 🙂

  16. Fantastic! I just had the idea to use these containers, & saw your video, reinforcing the idea! Thanks!

  17. I just moved to eastern Washington and have lots of pine needles, cones, and branches. Can they be used to fill the bottom of the totes?

  18. I love Robbie's method of cold composting in totes and covering with tulle. It's the only thing that has worked for me. Next time however, I will chop up the leaves because they don't break down as quickly and plug up the holes.

  19. Raise totes on cement blocks, milk crates , stacked bricks, any old chairs people throw out in tr garbage— even put a bridge between 2 or 3 of these with thick boards – thick enough to hold several totes in a row as they will be pretty heavy after filled w dirt & water & plants

  20. Hi Robbie. What a great idea. I need to learn about composting in place. I have seen that there can be fires starting in compost piles. Have you ever had a problem? And what about the heat that is generated from the decomposing matter, even if there's no fire?

  21. Warning. These things can break down and create sharp edges when they break apart. It might seem like a good fix but if you have to dig up a plant it can be real trouble. I had a piece of plastic fly back and cut me. And I have seen people fall while trying to move them.
