How to Handle Slopes in your Landscaping

How to Handle Slopes in your Landscaping . . . Retaining walls. Yes, of course but there are many other ways to handle slopes in landscape design.

You will be surprised at how interesting and important these retaining methods can be.

The primary purpose of these sturdy structures is to prevent soil erosion and effectively hold back earth on sloped landscapes. They are usually made with masonry, stone, or concrete; however, we are going to show some other methods that are innovative and very effective.

1) Retaining Wall Method – Tandem/Belgard on entryway-stairway 4 ft. retaining wall.
2) Waterfall Retaining Wall Method – Extreme Slope – The waterfall masks the slope
3) Kitchen, Fireplace & Stairway Retaining Wall Method – the built wall is the security
4) Hot Tub Method – Swim -Spa & Deck become the retaining wall
5) Seatwall w/Backrest becomes the retaining wall method
6) Built-up wall to foundation elevation – becomes retaining wall
7) Pathway & Boulder Steps & Hot tub – retaining wall
8) Outdoor Kitchen becomes retaining wall
9) Boulders & Plantings style to retain soil from erosion

Retaining walls: A wall that holds a mass of Earth. Proper design & installation prevents materials from moving due to gravitational pull. These sturdy structures prevent soil erosion, may create useable beds in landscape design and may also mask as decorative and functional seat walls.

These important walls date back to ancient Egypt, used to harness the Nile river. Egyptians built Gabion style retaining walls from reeds to counteract flooding and soil erosion. Retaining walls diverted the flow of water from the Nile into reservoirs as well as fields for farming purposes.
Yes, modern times have brought innovations in materials used to build retaining walls, they have largely remained the same: preventing soil erosion, creating space, and diverting water.

A famous retaining wall – the Great Wall of China is the longest border wall in the world at more than 13,000 miles long. It has been called the longest feat of human engineering built from 1368 to 1644. Whew, if you have ever built a retaining wall of any size, you will understand why we included these amazing historical facts in this description.

This video will give you some useful outdoor living ideas for retaining walls and sloped landscapes. The Before & After projects may provide a solution for some spot in your landscape.

  1. Looks great! We’re starting a project in Augusta, GA this week and we’re using quite a bit on the tandem wall. Pretty slick product!

  2. Wow! I live in North Wales and am struggling on my own with the hardscape in my garden. I live alone and its difficult trying to work projects alone. My garden is on three levels and on the right side its just a long slope, I;m digging it all at the moment and am finding old bricks, tiles, fire glass that has just been buried in the soil in the past, I am sore and disheartened. You are absolutely amazing and your clients must be thrilled. Well done to you and your team.

  3. Dude, why you bullshitting? The walls on the last house are River Rocks taken from a river. Those are not rocks from a quarry. Puuh-leeez!

  4. Have you considered the arisolized sealers. The pressurize the house and atomize a sealer that finds the holes

  5. We have a a slope in the front and back and it's a headache to landscape! Please help!

  6. this video basically just says, Hey spend thousands of dollars on your backyard and people will do stuff to it.

  7. Where would you start with a backyard that is mostly rocks, roots and weeds were trees were taken down 2 years ago? Would you all clear everything out to start from a clean slate??

  8. would be much appreciated if you showed more bi/split level homes! anyways thanks for sharing what you do 🙂

  9. Love many of your ideas. I live in Portugal, close to the Spanish border and I have a plot of land that's overgrown and very rocky, so it's hard to give that area, which is about 2 hectares, some purpose. I was thinking of turning it into a park with different seating areas.

  10. Beautiful work. We have a new home with a sloped backyard (slopes toward the house. Trying to decide how to handle that.

  11. Amazing ideas, where are you located? My wife an I are building our dream home our very small slanted backyard started at approx. 8 feet tapered down we need help with bringing our ideas to life. Can you help us out please.

  12. These are wonderful ideas and although my backyard is not as large as the ones you are showing, the many different design ideas such as plant, flowers, and shrub placement, retaining walls, ideas for living, lounging, dining, and cooking areas have given me ideas to complete the look of my backyard and side yard. I have a ways to go but my area has been quite windy for the last three weeks. Thank you so much for always sharing your ideas as they are very helpful. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾❤️❤️

  13. Beautiful, but this is for people with money. I'm 57, and I can barely dig a hole for a tree in this soil. Actually, even the grass doesn't want to dig off in areas. I'd have to cut all of the dirt out myself with a shovel.

  14. I really like these ideas, we have about 2/3 acres of land, house is on an uphill, the land is really uneven. I had no idea how to make this work while also creating amazing sections for a fireplace, garden, etc

  15. The slope I'm dealing with is no where the scale of the projects in this video but wow, thank you so much for talking through key ideas of creating destinations, and illustrating different ways to create retaining solutions. I'm pumped to tackle my little hill in suburbia USA thanks to you.
