Container Gardening

My edible BALCONY garden tour – Urban vegetable container gardening in 2020

Welcome to my south facing edible balcony garden, located right on the border between Washington, DC and Maryland! Almost everything on this balcony is edible and I’m so excited to be able to harvest some of these fruits and vegetables soon! I am a beginner gardener that is documenting my successes and failures at container gardening — just for fun 🙂

My tiny little balcony includes: tomatoes, cilantro, parsley, basil, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, rosemary, radishes, lettuce, green bell peppers, candy cane peppers, phacelia flowers, a hummingbird feeder, celery, lemon balm, curled parsley, kale, spinach and so much more. My favorite are the many tomato plants. Can tomato plants grow well on a south facing balcony or in small spaces like mine? We shall find out!

  2. i love your video and your plants. but i get the heebee jeebies seeing how far up you are. i have a question about using a balcony for gardening. my friend had a balcony garden that was just beautiful, when it became noticeable from ground level she was told it was against the code or something like that. i think the manager said something about weight limits. did you ask your manager about anything like that? i would love to see a video about the actual logistics of gardening on a balcony. my friend was so bummed!!!

  3. I don't have a balcony at my apartment. I'm a country boy forced to live in town for now, so I bought some grow lights and just started an indoor garden. Sure miss my big garden and my hoop houses.

  4. I live close to the MD/DC border too and I grew a bunch on my porch. I grew a bunch of the same herbs, cayenne peppers, yellow squash, zucchini and tomatoes. I'm going to add peas and bell pepper this year. I could definitely use that moisture meter.

  5. Loved your balcony garden tour, great tips and advice. Only started growing my own fruit and vegetables in my small yard in Ireland.

  6. For your gnats try putting about a tablespoon of mild dish soap like joy in your bucket of water . water in pretty well. You can also use a quarter tsp of rubbing alcohol. It does tend to dry out soil faster. Just be aware you can also put a dryer sheet near or on the side of pot but l wouldnt let it get wet. Dryer sheets can be put near your fruit bowl to keep gnats away . Diatomatias earth does work it just slow acting an dont be afraid to get it wet. Hope this helps. Nice little garden by the way . soap an alcohol does not hurt the plants o
    r you.

  7. How does your plants do when it's really windy? I'm in the DMV area as well and it gets very windy here. I have had to pull my pots indoors at times. I'm on the 16th floor of my building. Lol

  8. Thank you Nicole. I am planting my first balcony garden and your garden tour was a great help. Very encouraging also.

  9. Wow! I'm impressed Nicole. It's Tom from just north of Toronto. I also did all my plants from seed this year. It makes me feel wonderful to grow from seeds. Thank you so much for your vids.😊
