I’m so glad spring is late this year, because I’m just starting my gardening and feel like I’m chasing the clock! Not looking forward to this downpour!
the ground should be covered all year round , not necessarily with mulch but like your beds in Coburg , covered with a diversity of plants that we can call a " Living Mulch " as it would be in a natural environment , the diversity of plants will protect the ground from soil compacting rain & drying winds , this will keep the soil life in place , creatures like worms aren't eating the mulch , they are eating the bacteria & fungi on the mulch , one of the things plants do is attract organisms to there root zone which is one of a series of events under the heading of the " Soil Food Web "
I believe that we should forget the old seasons of the year going by the calender and go by the sun.spring should not start on the 1st of september but about the 20th when it's the spring equinox the same goes for summer not the first of December but the 21st when its the summer solstice
