  1. Already in the Middle Ages, cities had so-called allotments or vegetable gardens (Volkstuin / Moestuin) leased by the city, where workers could grow their own vegetables. At the moment, there are still some 240,000 allotments in the Netherlands. The Netherlands has just under 8 million families, so about 1 in 25 of them has an allotment. So it is a very old tradition and indeed it is not very common to grow vegetables in your own backyard although many people do have a small place for some herbs to grow. In addition, people who live outside the cities often have their own garden for vegetables at the back of there garden. And vegetable garden often also include flowerbeds.

  2. Raspberries means in Dutch Frambozen.
    Sometimes there are bushes of Raspberries in bushes in some random Dutch streets. those are mostly consumed by birds or ants or whatever..
