How to support wildlife in our backyards | Gardening for Wildlife Part 1

In this latest instalment of our Sustainable Gardening series, we went on a road trip to Ontario’s beautiful Muskoka region.

We spent some time with Laura Thomas, owner of Hidden Habitat, a native plant nursery, to learn about the many ways we can support wildlife in our gardens. Laura talked us through the intricacies of the food web, the surprisingly vital role played by caterpillars in ecosystems, and why it’s so important to have native plants in our gardens.

What do you think about gardening for wildlife?
Were you as amazed as we were by the role caterpillars play in the food web?
Let us know in the comment section below!

Gardenstead is an online gardening community and plant lovers channel of gardeners who love to get their hands dirty, both indoors and outdoors. Our gardeners run the gamut. They are vegetable gardeners, houseplant nurturers, small space gardening engineers, herbalists, flower enthusiasts and succulent aficionados.

Our goal has always been to connect gardeners in an inclusive gardening community, foster and share knowledge, and make gardening resources available to everyone.

As we grow, we seek to expand our conversations about gardening and to
cultivate a mindful embrace of nature and the healing and grounding properties
to be found in it.

Plants cultivate connections between people — from urban settings of balcony gardens
and small spaces to rural backyards with larger and more expansive gardens. We hope
you’ll join us as we continue to nurture these connections and create new ones.

To make sure you can find what you need, we divide all our content into playlists by topic:

Are you a total newbie and want to get started working in the garden? Then you should definitely watch our Outdoor Gardening for Beginners playlist! We share all our outdoor gardening basics and gardening hacks that work.
In this playlist, we cover all the outdoor plants, vegetables and flowers you can imagine, plus how to plant, harvest and care for them. All the info you need, in one handy spot:

Houseplants! We love ‘em, and we have a ton of helpful videos about houseplants on this channel. Keeping indoor plants alive and thriving can be a challenge if you don’t have the optimal environment for them but don’t fret — we can help.
We’ve dropped all our caring for indoor plants videos into this playlist. Our ‘How to keep houseplants healthy?’ playlist is built as a visual caring for houseplants guide, so you’ll never have to worry again about an unhappy indoor plant.

For urban gardeners and plant enthusiasts who don’t have a backyard garden at their disposal, here we share our best indoor gardening ideas.
Designing a small garden space can be tricky, especially inside or on a balcony. We hope this playlist with our best indoor gardening hacks will help you figure out what could work nicely for you and your personal garden situation, as it’s full of gardening ideas for small home spaces.

More and more people are choosing to grow their own vegetables. And vegetable gardening is reappearing trend which takes all different shapes and sizes — from fields full of crops to growing food in an apartment!
How to grow your own vegetables at home is a question we’ve heard a lot. Taking things deeper, though, in this playlist, we look into tons of different types of vegetables, plus how to get rid of garden pests without chemicals. And when it’s (finally!) harvest time and you’re looking for some ideas about what to do with the fruits of your labour, this is the playlist is for you!

Already watched all the videos we’ve published on YouTube? No worries, we have you covered. Every week we put up new videos to keep you up to date with the latest trends in gardening, growing, caring for houseplants, and more.
