How to make a raised bed in your landscape

If you want to jazz up the look of your landscape, a raised bed might help you reach that goal. On this edition of Get It Growing, LSU AgCenter horticulturist Heather Kirk-Ballard demonstrates how to clear grass and then build up a raised bed suitable for beautiful plants and shrubs.

  1. I think I would have left the cut grass clippings on top of the dirt. It’s good food for the worms. Then I would continue with the raised bed.

  2. I would imagine that if you wanted to add mounds or just raise up your yard level to add texture to the design then you could just put anywhere from 4 to 24 inches of triple mix and topsoil directly over the lawn with no landscape fabric except where you want to apply stones / mulch, etc and no landscape fabric in areas where you are planting schrubs, flowers, hostas, etc…. thoughts? Anything you plant you would have to dig deep enough and the soil on top of the grass(after a good haircut) would just die anyways due to the fact there is no sunlight for the blades of grass to absorb. just dont see any evidence as to dig or even shave off old grass
