Good Question: Covered Patio Ideas for Backyard (Should you Attach?) Hi Everybody! Micah, the Outdoor Living Guy here for another Tuesday Tip for you. I like this one a lot and I think it’s going to really help you when considering covered patio ideas for backyards. Many people ask where should I attach a covered structure to my house?
My recommendation? I do not recommend attaching a patio cover to a home. Go with a detached covered structure. When you are thinking about your outdoor space, you do not always have to attach a structure to your house. By detaching it, it serves as an amazing destination. You can have a Fireplace, Outdoor Kitchen & Bar, Dining Area, a beautiful Fire Pit w/seatback seat walls and an outdoor living space covered. You can see all kinds of covered structures in our website portfolio, but we are going to show you some in this video.
Why detached? See the pathway along the kitchen window? By being a detached structure, it gives more room to the outdoor kitchen and to furniture around the fireplace wall. It also allows the flow of foot traffic out the back door through the outdoor living room & kitchen around to the other side of the bar . . . and that’s the benefit – a more wide-open space.
Hardscape pavers and custom wood decking around & under the hot tub, are the foundation in this outdoor space. The detached structure is right outside the sliding glass door with plenty of room for the double-sided fireplace, putting green and hot tub . . . perfect for family fun most of the year.
From the top of the stairway, choose your destination. Is it a spa night? A quick game of mini-golf, or barbecue by the fire? Detached structures draw you out into your landscape.
And who can resist this magnificent detached structure, Tuscan Style, boasting flair & function. A large bar with outdoor kitchen, and sprawling living room make it one of our favorites. It resembles a mini Tuscan village with its extra kitchen amenities under the upper deck, a large dining area, and a compelling fire pit with seatback – seatwalls. Bravo!
Or how about a detached patio cover over a swim-spa and kitchen bar Island? Paired with a retractable awning over the dining area, it makes them a dynamic duo in shade & weather protection. Hip, hip, hooray for Covered Structures.
And these dog lover homeowners, fenced in the detached covered structure for their guests and built a dog run for their guest’s dogs on the outside of the fence. Now both guests and dogs party alongside one another. Clever homeowner idea, eh?
We all love spending time outdoors and having an outdoor structure to go out into is even better. Especially for food prep, table games, or shade seekers.
Another amazing property boasts an attached structure on the top level of the landscape and a detached structure on the lower level, at the bottom of the waterfall. It’s beautiful design cause some heavy sighs and motivating thoughts of SOMEDAY.
As we finish up, the crème de la crème outdoor structure . . . Now the man of this house sleeps many a night in this outdoor living room. And why not? It has ALL THE AMENITIES, after all isn’t that the point? Transitioning from indoor to out as if it’s another room of the house? We like that – what about you? Isn’t it about time for an attached or detached covered structure of your own?
If you have the right space for it, detached structures in my opinion are the way to go. Do not attach covered patio to house – think twice before building Okay guys, hope this little Tuesday Tip helps. Another great video. Thank you for answering this question about Covered Patio's. I really like the detached cover's that you feature in this video!
I LOVE these detached covered patio ideas. Thank you for all of the different style examples.
Depends on HOA/ City Ordinances/ HO INs Policy. many homes are not engineered to attach a patio cover. Some attach patios create a 12 month room, since it stops rain/snow from coming in on the attached side. My city will not allow for free standing, afraid it could become a nanny qrters or a rental unit. Other cities will only allow for a backyard/sidyard garden shed to be constructed under a patio, so the patio top hides the shed from surrounding properties, since most hoods are multi level homes.
Also, many cities will not allow for cafe light strings, state the glare bounces it to other properties and they could create fire hazards in storms, hi winds and electrocution if strung over pool.
I know why these vids are attractive!!
It’s not only the design to meet that dream desire…
It’s a pleasant place
like Disney World.
I feel so relaxed like I’m the guest of a privileged place …when it’s a local destination of relaxing elegant location ( like Disney World)…the place where you will never see garbage pails crossing your path as you walk while gazing upon a design of wonder and after another design and after further design in the distance.
It’s the 360° view (from the ground to the sky) rather than 90° (from the ground to the knees).
I remember visiting a tiki hut in someone’s yard…decades ago…he was asked …’why?’
His answer, ‘got the idea from Disney World!’ Destination!!!
I understand now.
(It was hard to return home after that! And we had a screened-in porch. No one actually used it…it was a bypass to the yard-outside to the sun&fun! Lol)
I love this idea. Feels like a private place to relax all year round, rain or shine !
In my city, all patios have to be attached to the frame of the house, so the patio roof can be used for fire escape hatch from the 2 story windows. HO INs will not cover patios, since they are non- livable. Most properties in the sun belt choose to run the patio entire width of the home, to act as sun shield for the rear windows of the home. That said, patio has to be divided in to 2-3 or 4 sections, in case of earthquake, so the entire unit will not collapse. Some Using aluminum, not vinyl, since it melts in wild fires.. My friend just finished erecting free standing Veranda, cost was over $250K w/FP and small kitchen. My patio needs to be screened in, after years of horticulture growth, bugs are issues and prevent us from using it to max. Out city is starting to allow large (L) shape patio, as the ratios of open space in the backyard have been reduced, Outdoor kitchens are great, not to well loved by handicap nor seniors. Too me, portable spas and in ground gunite spas, should be placed under the patio, to aid in UV Skin protections.
wow, this is perfect timing, I am putting in two new patio covers. thank you so much
These detached outdoor structures are works of art. You put out a great finished product.
This is really amazing! Love the detached covered structures.
I love the show and beautiful spaces you create.
Where does one purchase the black and white umbrellas?
really nice, love the different designs.
These are awesome, but shit i dont make 250k a year
These are amazing. I’m going with the first detached patio/bar for sure. Awesome work
Nice voice

I did attached – even in heavy rain or winter/snow I can start a nice fire – it feels like a room in the house but I get the appeal of the detached . Honestly I don’t need yo be incentivized or drawn out into my landscape I know what’s there
Always have a covered patio
can you add a detached structure; if you already have a covered patio?
They are beautiful. Attaching allows you to walk out of the house and not get rained on. After moving to the PNW from a dryer climate, I will be Attaching. Great video though
Patios, not "patio's".
WHAT SIZE IS THAT Pavilion cover structure is it 10 x 20 ?
