Covered Outdoor Room Transformation
Hi Guys, Micah Dennis, Outdoor Living Guy. It’s happy photoshoot day and we have a treat for you – a Covered Outdoor Room Transformation – start to finish. Taking a so-so backyard and transforming it into a beautiful, functional Outdoor Room & outdoor living space. When we first arrived at the property the homeowners had a somewhat completed landscape they liked. They also had a firepit but it was in an odd place in the backyard. They wanted an attached covered outdoor room – but because of their house layout we recommend a detached covered outdoor room with fireplace instead. I think you’re going to love the transformation we came up with. I can’t wait to let you see it right now!
Every year – when the sunshine arrives – especially Spring – people begin flocking to get their covered outdoor room design completed. Like the one we are showing you. For your own good – please start the outdoor room makeover this winter– yes, start-right-now. By starting now, you will be finished with the covered outdoor room and will be able to enjoy your outdoor space in the spring and summer months.
A GREAT OUTDOOR SPACE – usually has a detached outdoor room with fireplace. A focal point is the fireplace, an outdoor room with kitchen, a bar like you’re seeing here, a nice, detached dining area, and a big, beautiful fire pit. See photos like these all over my website at paradiserestored.com. I feel strongly about attached structures in landscape design if it works with the homes’ structure but if you have the right space for it, detached in my opinion is the best.
You’ll see this backyard is a 2-level area. Out the door of the house we have a sloped landscape coming back towards the home. Here’s a tip – create a cool seat wall/retaining wall that acts as a destination of its own. It serves two-fold by holding back the hillside and as a seat for guests to chit-chat. Or catch a snippet of the game while hanging out with beer on the seatwall.
Keeping the retaining wall idea going because this yard has the elevation change sloping towards the house, we added an L shape firepit with backrest to contain it. We excavated into the slope with a seatwall/backrest to create a destination and to have a flat entertaining area to offset this sloped environment. It’s a tip to keep in mind when you are coming up with your own outdoor room ideas.
I want to talk to you a little bit about the seatwall with the backrest itself. They are a great addition to any landscape providing many seats for friends & family. A backrest is added comfort especially if you’re sitting there very long! Afterall, there are stories ’round the fire you’ll want to share and hear! You want your seat to be comfortable and yes, most homeowners throw pillows into the mix for cozy, but we realized after we built a few – having the backrest at an angle makes a difference to all backsides (young or old) by having a slight curve.
Thanks for dropping in for this Outdoor Room start to finish. I love this job site and the homeowners that we worked with on this project. It’s such a beautiful destination spot. If you are creating an outdoor space on your own, be careful not to rush ahead. Educate yourself on attached &/or detached structures. Help make your space a dual/multiple destination landscape. We are happy to give you ideas or help problem-solve.
Thanks again Guys! Thank you for watching, thank you for subscribing, and we will talk to you soon!

Great Transformation!
very nice before to after video. I appreciate the covered space!
Do you operate in Maryland? If not do you recommend a company ?
love your videos, but I have a recommendation. speed up your intro song to 2x speed. it sounds much better. the original version makes me want to sleep. I like the tune though
Any chance you can do a video talking about light filtering into, or being blocked, from your inside living spaces? Is that taken into consideration when building your outdoor structures? Thank you!!
About how much would something like this cost?
I've watched quite a few of your outdoor transformations and for me by far this is the best!! just my personal preferences, as it is a good size with all the needed elements, but it doesn't feel overwhelming. their space was already great but this took it up several levels. great job as usual 👏👍
Love this setup what is the size of the patio
For covered outdoor patio like this, is there any way to attach a retractable shade/screen to prevent dust and dirt from coming in? I love the idea of the outdoor living space but afraid that it will be high maintenance
Is that a 12×16 structure measuring 10 feet from outside post to outside post with a 1 foot overhang on each side?
Great transformation video. Love what is done with the space. What are the dimensions of the kitchen along with the bar?
