Sharing for Nature – Maggie's incredible Seed Library

How can one Individual make a difference for nature?

Maggie’s house sits on the side of a busy road on the outskirts of Llanelli in South Wales. With it’s modest white walls, small front door and narrow front yard, it could easily be missed while driving by. The back of the house however, reveals a magnificent, rich, wild garden, full of magic, wonder and wildlife. For 20 years, Maggie has nurtured this garden, growing many different heritage plants and saving their seeds. During the Lockdown in 2021, she decided she wanted to help people. To grow their own food, to connect to other people and to fight the worries of the world by helping nature on their doorsteps.

Maggie created the “incredible seed library”. A free, online Facebook group where she offered to send people the seeds she had saved. Within two weeks, her offering had grown from the 20 seeds she had saved, to over 100 different seeds that people send her, wanting to help and be part of the community. Now, one year later, the first volunteers, the “seed guardians”, grow and save particular seeds for the purpose of stocking up Maggie’s library.
