I am hopeful for the future. My desire is that this video would encourage you to try gardening. We are facing uncertain times in today’s world. But we can do things to ease anxiety and help one another. We can be proactive and look for solutions in food security. We can learn to grow and raise our own food. We can share with others, not only what we have, but what we know.

I’m Lorella, a fairly novice gardener. I live in Missouri, zone 6b.
I can grow just about year around. I don't have to plant everything in a week. I always say jump in with 2 feet. I plant way more than we can use, because everything has its season. One year it might be corn that does well the next it might be something else. At the time of planting you don't know. Then I keep planting and plant some more. I've garden is zones 5a, 10a, 9b and now in 8b. After doing a lot of reading we decided that zone 8 would supply us with want we wanted to do. The hardest thing is getting everything to maturity before the bugs come in. Looking into ducks for patrolling to help keep the bugs down. I am doing permaculture mixed with the annual veg and fruits. Better stop here this is turning into a book.
I have no experience. Live in Aberdeen Scotland. We have went and got tomato, chilli and pepper plants. Have planted seed potatoes in tubs. Will be sewng carrot seeds in the next few days. No idea how it will go as do not have a clue what we are doing lol x
I have dabbled in gardening over the last 10-12 years but I haven't had vegetable garden every summer over that time and had zero gardening experience before that. I live in Manitoba, Canada in a Zone 3a. We have about 100 frost free days of growing time per season give or take a week. In previous years I have bought most of my seed starts from a nursery and only grown a few of our favourite veggies with enough for us to eat fresh and a bit extra to can in the fall. This year we're doing things a bit differntly. Last fall we expanded espanded our vegetable patch substantiallly and I planted garlic for the first time. This summer we're aiming put up a good amount of our own food for the year which could be amazing or a complete disaster as I've never gardened on this scale before. I've also started seeding my own starts for this season so we'll see how that goes. We're still a few weeks away from being able to plant anything outside (typically beginning of May is the earliest for cold weather veg and last frost date is not usually till the first week of June). I've already started my tomatoes, peppers, celery & leeks indoors. Hoping I am able to keep the peppers and tomatoes alive over the next 8 weeks or so before it is warm enough to move them outside! Looking forward to the rest of your video 🙂
Enjoy the video. What would be an easy vegetable to grow from my nursing home window? I have a broken hip a broken femur on the other leg and had surgery on my foot. So I am laid up for a while. But I did enjoy watching you Garden. Thank you and God bless
I'm Linda. I live in California, Delta area. I haven't gardened in 10-12 years. I used to get bumper crops of green beans, tomatoes and cantaloupes, but have not tried lately. I think I am in between zones 7-8.
Im in Texas. I have been gardening 4 years mostly in raised beds. My family had a garden as a kid so my dad has been lots help
Hey Lorella, I've been gardening for cough, cough, many years. I'm in Wales, UK.
Not an expert but I would say I'm knowledgeable. I grew up in my mamas garden. However, from 13 to 30 I was not in a place to have any kind of garden. Now I have a large garden and love it.
I have a little experience but its been years since I've had a garden though so it feels like I'm starting one for the first time😞 southwest Mo
Hello hon. Not much to tell really. Have not been successful yet but keep trying. Live in Arkansas, from Missouri and hope to move back to Missouri soon. Trying to sell a house right now is difficult. Waiting on the Lord. Depending on Him to open the right doors and shut others. Enjoying these videos and learning a lot.
Hi, Ive been growing veg in my garden for 30 years, and at my allotment for 10 years. I'm in Derbyshire UK. Dawn's No Dig Allotment.
I am pretty experienced. I focus on high desert so cold winters, hot summers and no rain.
I have tried gardening a few times but I am not great at it and honestly, don't enjoy it. I'm 100% chicken! I guess I'm going to be trading eggs for veggies if needed LOL.
Right now we are still in NJ as for now our gardening season is up in the air. We are moving to NC by end of June or when things get back to normal. We have talking about doing container gardening this year so it is movable. I have garden tomatoes and various peppers last year. That was my 1st time gardening. We are always looking at seed catalogs and dreaming…lol.
2nd year.. backyard garden.. tomato and peppers.. squash, zucchini and cantaloupe and watermelon…my downfall is watering everyday.. this year, i bought a sprinkler even though I know youre not suppose to water the leaves
Well, I have gardened up in Canada MANY years ago, but now I guess I am a novice growing a garden in Kentucky. There is a huge difference in climate. I'm sure there is going to be a learning curve. But this year is the year I get something in the ground. Have been digging up a pre-existing flower bed that I am turning into a garden bed.
I grow strawberries and blackberries in my back yard. They taste great and the grandkids love to pick them.
I have dabbled in gardening since I was a teenager, so 13-14 years. I’m in SC, zone 8a.
Miss Lorella, howdy. As always, my prayers for you, Chris, Carter and Lerleigh. I'm gettimg blinder and very 'old', but, well. Just realized, I prepped for 10 people for 2 years. always wondered where that $45, 000 went. lol. Stay safe my Friend.
Planters garden 1season
many years, same story… plants come to my house to die. by july too hot so i quit going out to water…so plants die. this year i decided to buy seeds instead, much more opportunity for plant killing, but, i ran up on winter sowing…it couldnt work! i set out to provem alll wrong… been eatin green leaves since mid february!!! i'm already laying out my calendar for 2021!!!!!! but i really am a gardening dummy, that's why i'm here. thanks
I've been gardening for many years but only really took it seriously maybe the last 10. I love to eat fresh from the garden and preserve what is left. I'm in north central Iowa.
I have been gardening for 4-5 years, 3 years in low desert zone 8 and now the last 2 years in Arkansas, zone 7. It's one of the loves of my life and my 2nd favorite "spiritual" practice!!!
I really hope your potato method works, I really want to try that as well!!! Let me know how yours goes!!! I have 25 lbs or organic seed potatoes and I still haven't figured out a spot for them yet, lol!
I had a tree shaded yard, so no garden until I got a community plot. Heavy clay soil. Took three years of adding compost, furnished to the plot holders from a university farm, to get good soil. Then we built a new home on a lot with nothing but clay soil. Five years later I have fruit trees, berry bushes and grow enough veg to feed us for a year. This is a suburban area with 1/3 of an acre.
I have gardened and canned food off and on for years. Now, because of where we live, we are container gardening.
A great video Lorella. Its great to see that us gardeners are here to show new folks how to garden and supply for their families. Your right about more people should be growing to ensure the security of their food. I think after this virus is a thing of the past we will see a huge influx of new gardeners.
Hi Lorella, Been gardening all my life starting in the family plot. We were the only ones with a compost. Friends teased me! Have gardened from New Jersey to Hawaii, Wyoming to Arizona, and now MO. Still miles from being an expert, but can sink a seed and tend it with varying success. I like to grow what wants to grow in each climate.
I usually get a small garden going in my backyard. One raised bed that I usually plant carrots in. 24 small pots that I put bush peas in at first and then switch to green beans when it gets warmer. Usually by then the carrots are also harvested and I throw the pea soil into the raised bed for the 2nd planting session of mixed-whatevers. Also 8 larger pots that I put a zucchini plant into each. A small strip in the way back of the yard that I also will put mixed other veggies into sometimes if I have time to till it and get it going. Usually cucumbers/more zucchini/completely failed attempts at cantaloupe or watermelon go back there. The back stretch has done well with zucchini but has always failed with everything else. So I end up with peas, carrots, green beans, and tons of zucchini. I also will put lawn clippings and fall leaves into a compost pile that every other year I put some potatoes into. They do OK. So basically, I get some good stuff to munch on, but nowhere near enough to live on. The yard is big enough to grow most of my own needs if I really put the time into it so I am thinking about putting in a while stretch of raised beds in the back area as I seem to have better luck with that than using ground soil. Gotta find other good plants other than zucchini though if I am going to try to grow all my food. Not sure why the zuc always comes out great but nothing else does.
Hi Lorella. That is chick weed growing in your wood chips. People can eat them and chickens love it but takes over areas fast.
I am in central Fl. I have a pretty big garden, I have plants of green pigeons, and that they can produce!! They have 11g of protein per cup. There’s a big misconception that beans produce gasses. I have peppers tomatoes fruits, sweets chards, kale, broccoli, cabbages, herbs, mint and camomile for teas. Fruits I have mango, bananas, peaches, pomegranate. I been in love of big garden all my life!!!
Even though I have so much in my garden, I struggle with zucchini, I plant many plants and all of them got worm 🐛 that eat the plant inside. Otherwise, I have a beautiful garden that is share with neighbors.
When a lot of food coming from the garden, I always spend sometime canning. I am 65 years old and that’s not the only thing I do, I clean, wash close, cook, bake and cut the grass. I do all of those things for three adults and two kids. Never been depressed. I still take time for myself and read, witch I like to do.
Thank you for this video. I enjoyed it. I garden off and on. I would call myself a fair weather gardener. I would really like to spend more time out there but over the colder months I lose my enthusiasm and the garden turns to weeds
Started out with raised beds and square foot gardening. Have slowly learned I can fill in the spaces with other plants. I’ve learned fertilizer really makes a difference. Been gardening going on 3 years and my tomatoes typically do okay, but this year they are flourishing(leaves bigger than my hand). Only difference is consistent watering and fertilizer. Been struggling with pill bugs eating all my seedlings this year.
I hope to grow enough cucumbers for pickles for the year as well as berries for jam etc. Also hoping to grow some new varieties! If you have any favorites for fruits or veggies let me know. Like you I’m trying to can and store as much food possible from my harvests.
I’ve moved into container plants smaller plants for herbs etc.
Hi! Im on my 2nd year of gardening so Im a beginner. Last year I did a container garden and soon realized I should have just gone big. This year Im planting a 3 sisters garden; Two 4×8 raised beds and 3 tubs that I will use for potatoes. I live in north central South Dakota on a reservation where good produce is even harder to find in this pandemic.
I'm in NH and I live in the city and garden very minimally but I hope someday to have the opportunity to have a homestead for my family
Been gardening for one year (this is my second). Previously I have owned herbs and two cherry trees but I don't count that. In Yorkshire, UK. 🙂 We've grown tomatoes, peppers, leeks and more. We have 15 fruit trees that we planted in the last year (10 this January), and am planning on growing more veg, fruit and flowers this year.
I am Daniela from Paderborn, Germany. I have been dabbling in gardening on and off for some years, but used the first longer lockdown in 2020 to get more into it: I actually grew some food and decided to develop the garden towards permaculture. I also started a local Facebook gardening group since there was none in my area.
I'm in the US, KS and I turned my back yard into a large garden. Planting one her, one flower per each veggie. Only animal is my rescue dog who attempts to keep the squirrels out of our garden. 🥰🐝🐞🦋🐿🐕
Garden failed. Not enough sun and we had bad infestation of something that ate our melons.
