Planting Winter Japanese Onions – Allotment Gardening For Beginners

Welcome to our planting winter Japanese onions video from our allotment gardening for beginners series. This is our first year planting Japanese onions https://amzn.to/3T0TckV but they come well recommended. If you are new to allotment gardening or are a beginner at growing your own food then recommendations will be a good starting point for growing great vegetables.

Planting onions is similar to planting garlic. You need Garden Dibber https://amzn.to/3T7LN3p to make a hole and then the onion set can be dropped into the hole. They should be in the ground so that the tip of the bulb is at or close to ground level. As they grow they will tend to make their way to the surface of the soil.

  1. Thanks for the video. Got hold of some 'Senshyu Yellow' sets. Round rather than shallots shaped. Planted them in bottles. Large fizzy drinks plastic, cut in half…almost through..folded over like saddlebags, hot glued together, drain holes added. Got a block of 36 standing up on the ground. Half filled with chicken manure compost topped with John Innes 3 to plant the sets in. I've covered the plot with straw to keep them warm and free from pests. The idea to save space but still plenty of room to individually grow. We'll see!

  2. So glad you've just done a video on these! Love your videos and was searching for overwintering onion videos only last night.

  3. Thank you Suzie. Onion sets just in. I ran out pretty quickly last year so hopefully have enough in to do me this time. Always a balance with me just having the kitchen garden.

  4. I love winter Japanese onions! We didn't plant many last year, and they were so good that I regret not planting more. Oh well, I can always look at yours.😄
