2.5 years alone in the high desert

After living 2.5 years alone in the high desert. I have learned much of what does and doesn’t work for sustainable living on my frugal, off grid homestead. In this video, I’ll show you how I have created food, water and shelter for myself and my livestock.

  1. Thank you so much for taking a moment to watch my homestead updates. If you have any questions leave a comment and I'll do my best to answer them all. If you'd like to vote for me to win a 1 year deer tag and $25,000 I would be super grateful. If I win I'll give a random subscriber $500. Cheers! https://biggamehero.com/2022/john-hancock-2

  2. Nature doesn't want us to survive out there, but allows a certain amount of resistance. Swales and ponds are great! Fighting for survival without disrespecting nature!

  3. None of my business, I know, but I'll ask anyway 😁: Do the pups come in at night or stay in their sandbag houses? I am on the fence about what to do with my dogs when I move out there, just wondering if the nocturnal creatures mess with them?

  4. I'm looking forward to the geothermal space and aquaponics when you get them up to speed👍as the boar, I certainly hope my buddy SnoopHog will get a stay at least for now lol

  5. Sweet spot on the bird!! Could it maybe be a type of night heron? I only say that because it’s rare to see great blue herons in trees, and it’s posture sure looks like a bunch of the night herons we see down here on the gulf coast. Congrats again on 2.5 years, an inspiration the whole time!

  6. Those bees will take over that geothermal and you will never be allowed in again. They will become to aggressive. Ask me how I know. That hive needs to be on a far corner of you lot. You will be burning that freaking thing down just to get rid of the damn bees!!

  7. Great re cap of your progress. Any plans on trying out hydroponics , specifically the Kratky method. If you get the PH and the nutrients right you can grow with about 90% less water than conventional growing.

  8. you have done a lot of work in just 21/2 years all by yourself! i am looking to get some land up in the high desert some where outside of flagstaff

  9. I was a private contractor in Iraq and we'd get cantaloupes, cut them open, and put the seeds on the roof to dry out on Sunday, we'd plant them in the native soil and put a sun screen over them, a handkerchief or something like that on Thursday and by Sunday we'd have sprouts and grow our own. It was the wierdest thing to see, but we did that. As long as they had the sunscreen over them they did well. Okra could take the direct sunlight and prosper. I love what you're doing! Best of luck and yeah, I'll keep voting for you.

  10. I have so much respect and admiration for what you continue to do in your homestead. It’s definitely a lot of work. I hope your vlog continues to grow exponentially. I encourage everyone to not only watch, but also subscribe. It’s simply inspiring. Thank you.

  11. I have my hybrids soaking in water now I can't wait until they root

  12. One year early in my gardening years, I had a total fail with the cabbage. My brocholi did well that year. I had a few chikdren, and in the effort to keep foid on the table and keep that foid interesting, i used the bricholi leaves for "cabbage rolls", and the brocholi stalks for cold slaw. It turned out so well and tastedso goid we continue to use those dishes on tbe menu.

  13. Pretty incredible what you're doing with the little amount of rainfall – it's a model for what can be done in those barren areas of the southwest. I'm looking to do the same in Southern Colorado. Keep up the great work!

  14. Looks great, been busy here in Alaska building more rabbit hutches and another colony cage. Setting at a total of 52 rabbits thus far.

  15. I admire your accomplishments and energy. I am concerned that your pond liner will suffer from UV exposure etc. if left as is. Why not bury it for protection?

  16. I always told my Mom that I could live alone in the desert for the rest of my life alone as long as I have my toys (motorcycles with me). My toys replace the joy of having any other social contact with other human life. Ghost Adventures went to a lonely ole' place out in the boonies called Cerro Gordo. That is proof to me that you don't need too much around you to be happy. Keep up the vids, what a cool channel this is G!💯💯❤️‍🔥😎

  17. Buy European red wiggler night crawlers worms
They will improve your soil and help with garden production

  18. You're way ahead of me and I admit I am inspired. I'm three years from homeless and only have solar, chickens and bees. Next is aquaponics. Bees are a pain 😫. They get mites and moths. I lost two "nucs" around 600 bucks to them. Try to find someone REAL CLOSER to mentor you if at all possible. Their help will be invaluable. Subscribed and anxious to see next video!!

  19. Hey man congratulations. I just found your channel and love the videos. I recently bought high desert property in New Mexico and I'm trying to learn as much as possible. I've already learned alot from watching you. I'm nervous to eventually go off grid in the desert but you're giving me confidence.
