One mans beaucarnea recurvata is an other mans beaucarnea guatemalensis, your pony tail palm looks like my red ponytail palm beaucarnea guatemalensis, my beaucarnea recurvata is pure green no red at start of leafs
I’ve thought of getting one of these but wondered how to keep it from getting too large. Now I know. I found it very interesting seeing mature specimens.
You could have put the fronds up in a pony-tail holder!!! 😂🤨🤣. On an “actual potentially useful comment” side of things, I would advocate for always keeping this tree in a round pot. The trunk is such a perfect circle, and in my humble opinion, I think that an oval pot would not have the dramatic impact of a perfectly round trunk centered in a round pot. ☺️
So nice to see you working on this plant. I have one which I repotted into a large patio size pot a few months ago. It is enjoying its days sunbathing on our patio. As you can imagine, they grow very well here in s.e. Florida. I trim up the "tails" so that I can see the trunk. I think they grow best for bonsai in deep pots. Yours sure looks GREAT after your work on it. You could put a "fairie door" on the exterior of where you started that hold. Would look cute?
Hej, Nigel, after the age of 45 I made a discovery in the forest, … There are actually different kinds of moss, in shapes and color..! And I was thinking of your lately visits to some bonsai shows here all is in the details, do you pick a specific moss for a specific tree?
I remember that gate! Thought at the time, 'This should be cool" . You were making a Baobab Jail cell. But then so much other stuff happened on The Bonsai Zone that I forgot. And now the tree is on to a different future. . . .cool!
I noticed you used Bonsai supply bonsai soil instead of your regular turface and perlite. Any reason for that. I have been using their soil for years on some trees but I still use your turface and pearlite on others. But im not a pro like you. I know my Brazilian Rraintree really started growing good with the bonsai supply soil. It just kind of sat there in the turface and pearlite not really happy but not unhappy either.
So glad you did a video on Ponytail Nigel – I have two, given by a friend, but there are no trunks, just leaves growing out of the caudex. How do I get them to branch? I'll definitely be pruning like you, next spring Thanks again.
What happened to your hair, Nigel? Do you need to trim it some, like your bonsais? Kidding, or course.. I have a ponytail palm about 45 yrs old which I grew from a 2" pot to now, now in a relatively small 20" pot.. Those pics of large ones growing in soil remind me how large mine could've gotten throug these many years!

Love it. Tree looking good awesome. Your hair's looking extra good today too 💚
It's a healthy ponytail bonsai unique in it's own ….. 😍
I think that to maintain its original shape, the ends of its leaves should not be snipped, and when repotted it must keep all of its roots.
It resembles your hair
At first glance of the thumbnail, I thought there was a bonsai growing out of your head
👍👌
Massive trunk. If you leave the gate on the trunk, it will give the illusion of a door even though it is closing up.
Morning tea while watching Dr. Saunders perform root surgery on this massive Pony Tail Palm.
Excellent finish!

Please forgive a personal remark, but have you considered handing your wife the blue scissors? Ace tree though.
Wow, that's impressive both the huge ones in the "Wild" and yours.
Now that’s a thumbnail… 😮😂😂
Great work Nigel!!!😍👍 I really like how it looks with the leaves/canopy trimmed up!😍😊
The wild ones look amazing too!😍😊
I like that your ponytail palm has several trunks starting quite low at the main trunk! Looking forward to the future development!
In french, pied d éléphant…Nice job..
Your head awesome 😎
My son was completly flashed, watching you doing the rootwork on this tree. Started instantly playing Alice Merton „No roots“… 😂
