The SECRET to Gardening is a SHARP Hoe and a FILE in your back Pocket

Danny’s dad always said The secret to gardening is a sharp hoe and a file in your back pocket. Danny shows how he sharpens the batwing hoe from Hoss Tools and his homemade hoe. He shows how he uses both hoes to weed the onions.

  1. I'm always bring stuff home from the dump and repurpose stuff. A sharp hoe is really a must in the clay up here. My soil is getting loser because of all the organic matter but still sharpen my hoe.

  2. Danny ive found that urine diluted 10-1 is really good fertilizer that also has other micro nutrients , as long as your not taking any medications you wont contaminate your soil , people will use bags of soil that has “bio solids” which is basically human crap but cringe at using their own urine

  3. Henbit should be the Kansas state weed. The purple flowers are pretty but the weed is hard to control. People here have their yards covered in the purple flowers. Is pretty though.

  4. Years ago, i bought several hoes made by "Rogue Hoe" They were formed out of the blades from field discs used by farmers in their large fields. They are some of the hardest steel and keep a fantastic edge. Sharpness eases the work.

  5. Killin' fire ants is super easy:
    One ounce orange oil
    One ounce Dawn dish soap
Warm water to make 1/2 gal

    Douche mound

    Ants gone for good.

Also, pee diluted 20:1 with water is FREE Miracle Grow!

  6. Oh Mr Danny, now I am planning a trip to the tool store to buy a bat wing hoe! The garden hoe I have is different and certainly doesn’t work that good 😂

  7. Found best files made in Germany, Sweden, Norway and Finland, files I used to sharpen my powers saw, misery whips chains. .
A good file was always handy for axe shovels,, horseshoes, plow blades, and disk and one man pull or push big wheeled cultivator.nlades and hay cutter.
Days about gone when there were those we called hammer and file men who could make or fix anything ng.
A good hoe is spring steel and as a young one the county black Smith used what ever iron oyr steel, Nicole babbitt we resued.

  8. Good job not choppping too many of those onions off with that sharp hoe. I use a thin bent blade hoe, it works great. I will definitly carry a file with me now. Thanks for sharing.

  9. That hoe is a beast! A homemade weed cutting beast. I love the angle you put on it to make it work better.
    Great advice sir.

  10. In the hardware stores around here they only sell cement hoes as garden hoes! When I grew up our garden hoes were 8 inches long and only 2 inches deep and were made of very hard steel! Wish I could find a couple! They were excellent for hill-ing patoes and killing witch grass

  11. Really liked you video about the sharpening of the hoe. I love a sharp hoe too! Saves so much of my energy. Every late fall i coat all my tools(hoes, shovels, rakes whatever) with used motor oil and an old paint brush. Let them hang until i need them in early spring and it helps preserve them so much.

  12. My grandpa was born in 1892 and to me, he walked on water. His walking stick was an old hoe he kept by the back door. He'd cut it down to a 1.5 " blade so it was easier to walk with. He would tap that old hoe on the cement back steps and my sister and I would come running. As he walked, he'd use his hoe to point out the weeds from the flowers, good bugs from the bad, or maybe a frog's favorite hiding spot. He always had that hoe and he kept it sharp with an old, broken file he carried in his back pocket. We use to laugh thinking his pants would fall down from the weight. We were to little to understand about suspenders, lol! My aunt got that hoe when Grandpa passed on and I got it from her. It's a beloved family treasure…and it's still sharp and used every year!

  13. This is why I love your channel Danny! This was such a great lesson. I never learned how to properly hoe to remove weeds. I learned a lot from this. Thank you!

  14. I'm glad to see you sharpening the other side of the hoe too. I also really like that the batwing hoe has a curve to it, seems much better than the straight type hoes.

  15. I worked in the hardware business for 25 years & sharpened customers hoes, shovels & lawnmower blades; According to all the paperwork we got from the implement companies; for example a garden hoe, should be sharpened on the inside edge not the back side of the hoe; I always followed manufacturers recommendations & never had any complaints; when the inside edge is sharpened, the hoe for example will stay sharpened because of the way it is used with a pulling motion towards your body.

  16. We are considering placing hay in between garden rows to cut down on weeds and grass. Do you have an opinion about this? We live in George county

  17. Use a hoe as I’m 28 years old young guy is really a back breaker for me! I’m surprised how my grandmother uses one for her age she’s 77. Old people were truly more durable, really strong back and agile
