How to Build an Outdoor Planter Bench–[DIY Garden Bench Plans]

I’m so excited to share this fun outdoor planter bench project to kick off spring in our new home!

This project was sponsored by my friends at The Home Depot & Vigoro. After the build was over, I turned to the innovative line of Vigoro products available exclusively at The Home Depot to help me add some color and some life to my new planters!

You can build only the planters if you’re just needing something cute to put your favorite plants and greenery in this summer. Or, you can take it a step further and add the bench to give your planters double duty and give your garden, patio or porch a little extra seating.

  1. I know I've seen you wear the t shirt, dont know if you follow, but congratulations on Murray State making the 2nd round of the ncaa tournament.

  2. Looks great! This will probably be going on the to do list at my house. Keep up the great work.

  3. Really beautiful work, Shara! It turned out fantastic! 😃
I'm going to show your video to my mother later! She's going to love it!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

  4. Oooh now you have given me an interesting idea. This will look great in the front garden.
    Thanks for sharing!

  5. Hey Shara, when you sand the fence pickets did you start with a particular grit? Perhaps 80, then 120? On the bench seat I might turn the boards to a 30 degree angle. That way, no gap.

  6. Excellent vidio looks very nice thank you so much for sharing enjoyed watching

  7. Haven’t even watched the video but from the pic I know I want one in my yard.

  8. Love the concept and the build looks awesome Shara as always. But I have purple/ black thumbs I kill shrubbery with the touch of my hand lol.

  9. Another hit. I will attempt to make one from boards I pulled from my brothers old cedar shed. Ty again for another great build video.

  10. Great idea to use fencing planks. Did you apply any finish to protect it? I dont like painting, but i was told it is the most durable for outdoor furniture.

  11. They are really nice.i have a lot of people asking me to make them planters.i never concidered adding a bench to them too.your a very clever individual, love all of your project. 😊

  12. I watched this video with my wife. Big mistake! My honey-do list just got that much longer. I don't mind because I love my wife. Thanks for another great and simple project.

  13. That's a cool little bench and planter comb. Great job.
I'm not going to lie the way you figured out the angles, blew my mind. Lol I never thought to do it like that. Thanks for the tip.

  14. Wow! This was great! And I love how you showed your real progress and hiccups with the slats not looking how you liked. Using the pickets like that was an awesome idea!

  15. Love these types of simple, quick and fairly easy build. Question: why not make the bench longer so that all is needed is to remove the dog ear part and max use of the six foot picket fence?

  16. Hi Shara, love the project. I’m not too experienced with types of wood but would this project be ok when exposed to the elements? Rain snow etc? Or should I add some type of protective finish to make it last for years?

  17. It looks amazing as usual Sharah! I’ll bet that cut cedar smells amazing!! Also I suspected you were a math nerd lol.

  18. Great idea! I really appreciate how real you are in your videos. My challenge is the cedar planks, I have a hard time finding straight planks. I have to dig through the pile. Were you able to find those easily?

  19. The planter bench turned out great and thanks for the tip on how to measure the "X" angles using the framing square. Looks like Lucy gave the project her seal of approval too!

  20. That looks good. I think I would add one plank for a back rest. Maybe add some lights beneath the planters to give some extra in the evenings. 😀

  21. Congratulations on your very successful channel and I love this project that I plan to build. My very wise grandfather (and I am now 70 years old myself :), told me that if you meet someone that does not like dogs, "that is probably not someone you want to have as a friend" :). My shop dog Buddy is a 90 pound mutt rescue and he brings me joy and Lucy reminds me much of him. Thanks for the tips on the angles without math!

  22. Math nerd….2 seconds later "words are hard" I have never felt so identified in my life hahaha. I studied electronics which is basically math at the end of the day and today at a work meeting I said, words are heard when I tried to say something but missed like 3 or 4 word in just one sentence. Hahaha

  23. Watched your video a few days ago and decided to build this awesome garden bench.
Glad I used cedar for the build. The only difference is I used granite for my bench. It's coming out sweet. Thanks for the inspiration!

  24. Well, it's kind of embarrassing but I have no idea how to use a square other than to draw a right angle. If I need to find a weird angle then I'll use and adjustable angle square.

  25. Nice. I think I'll make one with a bench for by the fire pit. Styrofoam coolers in the plant boxes. Cedar keeps the bugs spiders and critters away.

  26. If I may ask where did you buy those plastic inserts? You said they were 6 gallon right? Thanks! Nice video! You make it look so simple lol
