  1. Not bad advice, but I would warn against going to a heavy equipment school. Every boss I've worked for in the quarry and landscape supply industries laugh when they see that on a resume.

If you want to get into quarry work, apply at one of your local quarries, most of which are locally owned, for a bottom of the barrel position, either general labor or plant operator. This is where the owners and equipment operators weed out bad workers. They will be assholes to you for awhile, but keep at it. Do well there and they'll get you into some kind of heavy equipment eventually. Even if they just train you without promoting you, that's your way in.

  2. Start from the bottom as a laborer or flagger, learn everything you can, work as hard and as much as you can. Make your bosses the heavy equipment operators jobs easier every way you can you will be operating equipment yourself soon. If you go to heavy equipment school they probably will still start you as a laborer so you can learn how and why things are done the way they are done. I just turned 20 years old recently and I operate a Hitachi Zaxis 870 excavator for a large grading company in the Southeastern United States, it definitely didn't come overnight, but it sure was worth the work!!

  3. my dream is to own my own excavating company. I love operating but can't seem to really get started. Operating is my passion

  4. I have a small excavation company. I don't know why I clicked on this but I guess I was excepting to laugh at some lame advice. Fact is I got something out of it. Well done.

  5. Great video! I've liked everyone I have watched so far. I'm on a limited budget right now but hopefully can get my business going soon. Thanks for doing these videos!!

  6. I'm stuck in a dead end job. I loathe the work i do. I want to get out and do something actually productive, but not foreclose on my home.
Military experience as infantry can only get you but so far. Thank you for approaching this subject for those of us who have literally no idea but are motivated to do something useful.

  7. The problem of getting a mentor or even asking for advice as everybody is so threatened your going to take there work. nobody will tell you anything.

  8. Just started my apprenticeship as a operator engineer with local 18 super stoaked, left my old career in law enforcement to do something rewarding

  9. I went the mining route. Got a degree in mining engineering and started out doing mill maintenance, then started picking up training on mobile equipment – mostly skid-steers and wheel loaders at this point in time.

I've recently begun prospecting old claims with an eye towards operating one, and am in talks with several people about purchasing some older equipment to get started. The bare minimum nowadays is drills, a compressor, generator, fans, a compact loader (I'm leaning towards an old EIMCO or Wagner, underground equipment is built differently and sturdier than construction equipment), an underground truck, magazines for explosives, and a way to process or market your ore.

As a stepping stone to running a mine, I'm strongly considering doing drill-and-blast contracting, and/or mining services for claim owners. There are a lot of people who own claims that have fallen into disrepair – there may be money rehabilitating portals and doing ground support work.

  10. Am excavator and wheel loader operator but I want to improve my skills as professional operator in above mention. How much will it cost me, secondly, will u give me students visa from ur school ?

  11. I take heavy equipment in october and this 6 minute reminded me I've thought of that last tip " communication " is a really big deal your right .. thank you I learned lots from this video !

  13. I guess I'm a little different; I have a full time job working shift and I'd like to get into a small outfit that I can do (one man crew) on my days off. I'm thinking; 1 ton truck, trailer and 1 piece of equipment. Skid steer likely, the JCB 1CXT seems interesting, or maybe even a compact tractor. As long as it pays for the e
equipment I'd be happy with that!

  14. I dont want to become a boss or whatever, I just want to drive big f-machine and love my job xD! Love the video , very interesting and love the machines clips.

  15. I BSed my way into a skidsteer job with your videos as training. Then moved to a backhoe, then on to a big wheel loader. And all I did was watch your videos lol

  16. I'm in operating engineers local 18. Joined back in August 2001. I bought 8 pesis of equipment. Working out a there. Honestly I just want to do my own thing now.

  17. I got hired the first time because I ran farm equipment from a combines to balers to grain carts and elevators and I could weld pipe.

  18. Starting off in landscaping companies…. even tho you are pushing to move into the heavy world. Please look out for the money hungry companies out their. I have dealt with way to many. These type of companies will promote you more then once. Hey great I am going up the chain. However, they would never increase my pay. The last companie I work for i started off as a lawn care labor. Then then promoted me to equipment operations for the special projects team. Then to a field supervisor and then the final one of project supervisor. You be thinking by now they would give you a pay bump. Nope I started at 13.50/hr. At the end of my contract with them I was a labor, equipment operator, supervisor and project supervisor for 13.50/hr. They made me threaten to quit to get the raise I had earned. Just remember your worth. Your time is important. You are worth the coast of your time. Also stay away from revolving door companies. Good place to start. Bad place to stay.

  19. Wow I am inspired I want to start running business with Heavy duty Machine i can operate Tractor Loader Backhoe, Front loader, Excavator, Skit steerer, Truck drive’s license I got it 9 months ago
