Japanese Garden AT NIGHT!: Korakuen Garden

Korakuen is one of the Top 3 Traditional Gardens of Japan. It’s located in Okayama City, Okayama, Japan and has numerous events throughout the year. For the end of the summer, they had an event after dark where you could appreciate the garden under illumination. It was so beautiful! Korakuen Garden was completed in 1700 for the Lords of the era. In 1884, it was opened to the public. Sadly, during WWII much of it was destroyed, but it was rebuild based off of paintings and pictures of the original to match as closely as possible to what it once was.

We enjoyed a delicious cup of peach kakigori (traditional shaved ice) at the food and beer gardens while listening to the crickets, cicadas, and frogs and staring at the castle above us.

Later, we went to our first Izakaya (a casual dining and drinking restaurant) and enjoyed yaki niku (grilled meat). We finished the night by wandering around the city after dark. It was quiet and beautiful. 🙂
