Having just moved from Oregon to Ventura County, California one of the most common questions I’ve gotten this past month has to do with my desired grass types for my new lawn.
It’s taken me weeks to really settle on what I plan on growing so I decided to make this video to fully explain what I plan on installing in the various parts of my property.
Late in the video I announce my plans for an up-coming book-a-call service for viewers to get paid support on their own lawn plans. When that service is released I’ll link to it here and in the video descriptions for most of my video library.

What are the temps for your new area? Obviously you saying southern Cal, but what are high temps in summer? Couldn't you still put tall fescue for your lawn? Water once a week. Would be green throughout the year
Thank you for opening your life up to us & educating us!
I was going to mention you should maybe look into getting Marathon and then boom you mention it LOL. I had Marathon installed , just a bit over a year ago ( in my back yard ). Man let me tell you it looked amazing once installed. Then summer came around omg it looked awful!! and almost made me re do the project thinking it was my soil or just the roots not handling the heat .Living in LA with watering restrictions and minimal rain ,it did not help at all :/ I watered a bit more than what they allowed to just help it from dying but it was looking bad . BUT …… , i fertilized it a few days before that heavy * rain we received a few weeks back, and OMGG it looks amazing ! it sometimes gives off a hint of blue , in the early AM .🔥🔥 ❤️🙏. i guess it was just the dormancy and me expecting it to stay green all yr had me worrying and panicking lol . Definitely would recommend the marathon sod especially for people who don't want to invest tons of time or money, in upkeep.
Was that Kikuyu grass actually $149.99 per pound?
Fescue is going to do great there.
Very interesting!
Congratulations on the "Book A Call"
This lawn looks like it's going to try your patience!!
I recommend yoga!!
Just out of curiosity how much will you be charging for replies?
I hope you don’t bill me for a reply to this comment 😆
Great grass type choices! Thanks for sharing! I was in the same boat couple years ago after having just moved to LA. Ended up with St Augustine in the front lawn and TTTF in the back. It's been fun learning and managing both warm and cool season types. Looking forward to seeing how your lawn progresses.
decomposed granite or bark with drought tolerant plants would look nice on that long park strip, ornamental grasses, fountain grass and or some Mexican sage would fill that strip easily.
Wow you are busting out the big guns (fusillade and Turflon Ester) I've always been curious about the Turflon, my garden center (Armstrong) has small bottles of it. Used to be $27, a year after inflation it's sold for $47. Look forward to you being the guinea pig before I actually throw down money for mine.
Nice choice with the Marathon, roots supposedly run real deep. And you can pick up grass seed at most premium garden centers. Also there's marathon II and III versions that can be mowed shorter/darker but require full sun.
Can't wait to see your buffalo grass renovation!
Why did you decide to move to Southern California?
I only commented not for a reply but to help your channel by tricking the algorithm.
Welcome to California. I'm down the street from you. I'm from Oregon as well. Big turf grass guy myself. Let me know if you want to grab a beer and talk grass or need a hand with anything.
Maybe k31 out back? Its tough and drought tolerant.
What was that scarifier brand model? Oh and luv watching your plan on front and back yards. And thank you for these videos.
What are your thoughts on zoysia for your area? Will last through the summer and tolerates the winter very well for southern areas like southern CA, and Phoenix?
Southern grass is so foreign to me. It's like a whole new set of things to apply and do to the lawn compared to northern grass. Hope you get it dialed in. And BTW Mr. Brian, no need to reply to my comments. I just want to let you know your channel is great! I enjoy the deep dives into lawn care you provide.
Marathon is a very popular grass type in SoCal. Can’t wait to see the progress!
