Warning Thought WHY Bag SOILS did Not GROW, Creating Free Soil from Winter Plants & Container Garden

Vegetable Garden Vlog working in the vegetable garden, collecting leaves off plants for my soil, knowing your soil before you put all your plants in it. Using a cart to wheel around buckets and containers, save your back from lifting heavy things around the yard. I elevate containers to make gardening easier, and rolling with big wheels a grocery cart will work too for saving that back of yours!

  1. Would love to show u a photo of the new plant stand i came up with. But idk if or how to post in comnents.
We tore our deck out, took down above ground swimming pool this summer. Made a new area out of concrete. Gave pool away. The stairs were left. I just put all my potted edible violas, pansies, candula, blue cornflower, a couple strawberry plants, and about 6 other veggie plants. It looks so good. The stairs kinda wrap around.
Now if i can just get it figured out what to plant my bareroot asparagus in. They have massive, long roots. They live for 40yrs!

  2. Let's be fair about bagged potting mix. I use it, then I amended it to keep it producing. I am making compost on my back porch, in a large storage tote that I drilled many holes in so it's aerated. It's also well populated with red wiggler worms. I put a handful in in it back in the late spring and have had a population explosion.
I'm in western South Carolina, zone 8a.

  3. The weather is unusual for this area right now. However, at any given time it will be freezing. For now, I am watching the back garden raised beds fill up with future soil (leaves). Lots and lots of leaves. I also ordered a solar fountain (on sale) and a new hummingbird feeder. Since I'm under the weather right now, I'm planning instead of working. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

  4. Grazon is the main herbicide that has been infecting soil mixes and commercial compost, even cow and chicken manure as their systems don't break it down. A few other channels are running tests in the beds they've had impacted and seem to be gaining ground cleaning their soil. One test people can do is to try growing green beans before planting anything in newly purchased soils. If they don't sprout up healthy, there's a problem.

  5. One way you can do your own soil test for grazon that is really the worst of the herbicides is plant some beans in a pot using that soil the plant will come up beautifully it will grow for a little while then it will become all deformed and twisted and die and since beans are so fast and you could do it indoors so you know you have bad dirt that way without ruining all of your garden

  6. I test any purchased soil or compost with presoaked peas or beans from the grocery store. Peas or beans will sprout tails when lightly covered with water within 2 days if they are alive; I put the test soil or compost mixed with soil into a seed starting set-up, plant the sprouts. I wait until the seedlings grow at least 2 sets of adult leaves to make sure the leaves are not stunted or twisted, THEN allow the purchased soil into my garden. I check that all the bags are from the same manufacturing batch, OR test every bag.
With peas or beans, the whole testing process takes less than 10 days, and a $1 bag of beans will give me hundreds of tests.

  7. Thank you Robbie! I was feeling the same way about the potting soil. Today was the first time in several days that I was able to go out and work in my yard . My son raked up leaves and I was able to pick up pecans. I do it from my power chair,

  8. I know it’s not time to start peppers in zone 9 , but w a seed mat —Which one of ur seed starting methods wud u recommend ?

  9. Hi Robbie, I’m so glad you made this video. You are good company as I do my late afternoon chores. Lol I listened again as I worked in the kitchen scratch/batch cooking. Made my first carrot cake with cream cheese frosting (sugar substitute of course), split pea and carrot soup, and sweet potato/banana mini waffles. All turned out so yummy. Thanks for the good conversation and great tips. 🎄✝️🎅🌟✨

  10. You are so right! I feel better too when I eat from my garden. I have cancer, can really get tired. I eat greens from garden, moringa and purslane. I really do feel better, have more energy.

  11. Yes!!! Same here…nothing really grew for us this season..only two tomatoe plants…thank you for saying taking a break…with my mother's alzheimers its been a challenge

  12. I work in Healthcare and I made some garden "helpers" this past Spring using old oxygen cylinder carts. The hook on the back is perfect to hold a dipper to water plants, the top hole that the cylinder would fit into holds a plastic Folgers coffee container and the bottom hole that the cylinder would rest on is perfect for a gallon jug filled with compost tea. I made 8 of them and sat them in different areas of my garden so I'd always have one available no matter where I was working.

  13. Hi Robbie! Loved this video, esp loved the picture in picture demonstration of how you layer the dead and yellowing leaves in with a bit of broken down soil. Will you be selling some of your walking onion bulbils? I would love to purchase some!! I planted some I had ordered from a seed company several years back… they grew , but sadly never produced due to my top dressing my beds with a " garden mix" compost contaminated w aminopyralid herbicide. My garden is finally beginning to overcome the damage. I never thought I would be so happy to see a weed grow up to adulthood in my veggie beds!! Yes … 2 and a half years later… finally seeing weeds. And I had done everything I could research & think to do to neutralize it… spent alot of good money, and also wasted alot of time on recovery. Glad to see you warn people!! IT IS THAT IMPORTANT!!!

  14. I listen to Robbie like I used to listen to Bill Balance ( radio host ) 70's and 80's RIP. Billo

  15. Robbie thank you for all your help! I'm eating from my gardens all the time thanks to all your advices!
One time I bought a bag of soil that burnt some of my plants and I never bought it again. You are so right!!!
Yes we all need a break ❤️but my gardens always giving me such a pleasure and joy with all these bad things happening…
I always get my wheel bucket, just like yours, when I go to the supermarket or to the farmer's market cause I don't use my car! It is sooo convenient for me !!!
Please always take care Robbie ❣️✨🌻

  16. Thank you for taking us along with you as you discussed different topics while working in the garden! 🙂
